Last night, my sister's family pet, Spencer, started to show signs that he wasn't feeling well. He didn't want to eat and just wanted to drink. This morning, the dog could barely walk. They rushed him to the ER vet clinic and exrays revealed numerous internal tumors. He was experiencing internal bleeding because one of the tumors apparently erupted. A surgeon was called in and they could offer them no hope. Too many tumors....lungs, kidneys, liver, stomach....:( They questioned, wondering WHY the regular vet didn't see this (he was taken annually for check ups). They said this type of cancer can spread to this point in only a matter on months. They put their beloved family pet to sleep to ease his suffering. :(

My nephew has no kids of his own...this was his child. The 2 of them were inseperatable. Any pixie dust you can share would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Spencer. :( It's always hard to lose a beloved pet, especially the one's we have an extra special bond with.

Prayers & pixie dust!!! I remember all too clear the pain that goes along with having to put a pet ( in our case - our 1st born) to sleep. It will be 2 years in April and sometimes I still find myself looking for him. In time it will get easier for them. Just this past Christmas we bought a new puppy for DS & DD, and it has helped. I know someone who went to pet grieving meetings when his cat died. There are also some websites that touch on the subject and can put memorials on the website in honor of the pet. Many people think it's crazy, how upset pet owners get when they die, but we see our pets more than we see any other family members (except those who live with us). Thoughts & prayers their way.

How sad, I'm so sorry your nephew is going through this. :(

I can relate, as I had to have my precious kitty (had her almost 10 years) put to sleep one week before Christmas. The week before she started urinating outside the litter box. I thought it might be a urinary tract infection so took her to the vet, they tested her, no infection. Said it must be "behavioral." Brought her home and within 2 days I took her back and said "check her again, there HAS to be something wrong!" as she was leaking urine all the time, could not hold her tail up, and was starting to have trouble using her back legs. They x-rayed her, turned out to be cancer and it had progressed to her spine. It hurt so much to have to have her put to sleep, I missed her so badly. :(

Thought I would never want another kitty, but...my daughter had 3 indoor cats and said they were going to HAVE to put the third one outside in the spring. They had tried finding her a home but no one would take her. So I reluctantly said I would "give her a try", as my daughter said she was a lap cat. The first day I had her she spent 3 hours sleeping in my lap. And within a few days she had wriggled her little way right into my heart. ::yes::

I realized a person's heart can expand and love another pet, although the new pet doesn't take the place of the lost pet, it can do your heart good to let another one inside. I'm SO happy my daughter was never able to find her another home, I feel she was MEANT to be in MINE!! :)

Sad to read, Colleen. :( Pets are family for sure. My very best for them. Similarly, we have Doc's oncology visit tomorrow. Maybe pass the Rainbow Bridge onto them.........

called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and
play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
So sorry to hear the sad news about Spencer. Our furbabies are so big a part of our lives and hearts. I'll keep Spencer's family in my prayers.

Poor little doggy. :( Lots of pixie dust coming. Such a hard, hard thing. My thoughts are with you all.

I know how they feel...it's a devastating loss. I lost my beautiful big black mutt last summer due to spinal cancer & we didn't have a clue she was sick until the day she couldn't walk. We put her down the same day...very heartbreaking!! I still miss her, but we adopted a 2 yo belgian shepherd last fall who melted our hearts. I had a harder time loving her because I didn't want to set myself up to be hurt again, but eventually realized it's worth the risk.

Some advice my DH gave me was "don't pick the scab". If you let it, and don't dwell on the pain, it eventually gets down to a manageable proportion. One day at a time...:grouphug:

Pets are so much a part of the family that it is devastating when something likes this happens. I am so sorry for the family and the poor doggie. Our previous westie all of a sudden couldn't see and was walking into walls. He had a pancreatic tumor and we had to put him to sleep the same day. He was 13. It is so hard and so sad. Prayers and pixie dust for your nephew and his family.

That sounds like hemangiosarcoma- tumors of the blood vessels. They can happen anywhere in the body, and the vessel walls are very thin and can rupture spontaneously. The vet was right, they do grow fast and even if they had known about it there is no treatment.
P & PD for the family.

Sending prayers for Spencer and his family. We lost our lab mix Jake to lymphoma last month, and I'm still having trouble dealing with it. My daughter just gave me a DeMarco angel, the Angel of Caring, which is a boy cradling a black dog in his lap. It reminds me of my son and Jake - as the only two males in our house, they seemed to have a very special relationship. I'm sad for you all.
