Can family borrow MB?

We are going in September and have new magic bands on their way. We have family who will be meeting us for just a couple days. They're not buying their tickets until they get to Disney. Can they take our old magic bands to WDW and use them once they buy tickets? If so do they need to be deactivated or should they be active? Thanks!
