Can cold germs live on food?

I know this may sound dumb, but dd8 helped me make candy last night and now she is coughing. They are peanut butter balls dipped in choc. ( buckeyes). So yummy! Should I just keep them for the family? Can the germs live on them? They are not a cooked candy.

Well, if your DD seemed fine last night, and she wasn't coughing over the candy, I would keep it.

But then again, I follow the "5 second rule":rolleyes1, depending on the cleanliness of the floor it was dropped on!!
 
I would think as long as she washed her hands before handling and making the candy it's okay. I'm sure when we go out to restaurants, super markets, coffee shops etc. there are people with colds cooking and handling food.

If you are concerned though, just keep that batch for her (and you!) to eat and mix up another batch for gift-giving.
 
I think the longest cold germs can survive outside the body is 6-12 hours, so even if they WERE on there (which they might never have been) they're dead now. :thumbsup2

They can sometimes live longer on hard surfaces, like a countertop, a doorknob, or a shopping cart handle, sometimes up to 48 hours.
