I just finished reading all 5 Harry Potter books :wizard: (I'm a school teacher :teacher: and I thought it might help me connect with some of my students - It's hard to believe that the 1st HP book came out in 1998) Anyway, I loved all 5 books and now I'm depressed because I'll have to wait at least a year to find out what happens.

So, Can anyone recommend a good book? Thanks.

How about Diana Gabaldon ? She writes the most amazing books!
Outlanders, DragonFly in Amber, Voyager and the other one I can't remeber at the moment

Also Lynn Kurland is great...she is pure entertainment...love her!

what kind of books do you want to read? i am not particular as long as i am reading and it can catch my attention. i loved the hobbit! i really want to read the rest of the lord of the rings books but havent bought them yet. and any anne rice book is definitely a good read! but you kind of have to read them in order or you will be lost.

Sorry- Not children's literature (unless it's really good and something new - I've read most of the classics). I enjoy most types of literature -fiction (especially southern lit.), sci-fi, etc.

Just something that you have read recently and thought, "Wow! That was really good." Thanks!

:hyper: (I don't know why I put this here...)

I highly suggest Holes by Louis Sachar and then rent the movie.

Also, Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is very popular. I liked The Devil Wears Prada. Maeve Binchy books are always good, Scarlet Feather in particular. You might like Fannie Flagg books too;they are southern. How about "Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts? I think that's a movie too.

:earsboy:

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is the best book I've read in ages. Heartbreaking but wonderful.

The Van Gogh Cafe and 100 Dresses, though more for younger kids, both are VERY good! ::yes::

Holes was also a great read! ::yes::

J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. She has a series out called "In Death". I think there are 17 books in it. I read the first one and couldn't stop until I hit #16, then I had to wait for what seemed like forever for #17 to come out.

I have read some really good books of late. The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks and The Bleachers by John GRisham. This one was different for Grisham but it was very entertaining. Sandra Brown and Patricia Cornwell both have new books coming out next week. The Patricia Cornwell is a new Scarpeda (sp?)book. Jan Karon has a new Mitford book coming out in a couple of weeks. September and October have been very good months for new books.

I jead read "The DaVinci Code". It was great! I didn't put it down and read it in only two days! Of course, the laundry didn't get done, and the family didn't get fed, but you can't have everything, right?
 :guilty: :rotfl:

If you haven't read Seabiscuit...it is a great read!! Personal interest and history!

How about the Evanovich series (stephanie plum)...One for the Money, Two for the Dough

Nicholas Sparks - The Rescue is a lite read!

More heavy but very interesting is the new Ben Franklin biography

Happy reading!!

I know it's not a new book, but it remains at the top of my favorite 10 book list - and surprisingly many people have not read or heard of it. "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb is an excellent read.

"Girl With a Pearl Earring" is a wonderful book. Deceptively simple but just beautifully written and an engrossing story. It's based on the Vermeer painting by the same name.

"Cold Mountain" is one of the best books I've ever read, period. It's the story of a Civil War soldier who had seen enough war. He deserts and spends most of the rest of the book trying to get home. Meanwhile, the woman he left behind is going through a few things, too. It is a very literary book with language I savored and pages that you want to read twice.

Coincidentally, movies of both of these books are coming out in December. Nicole Kidman is already being touted as Oscar material for Cold Mountain.

The Evanovich books are a fast easy fun read. I got my girls (adults) hooked on them during vacation this summer and they were reading all the time.

I'm reading Mothman Prophecies since I just rented the dvd

If you like Southern themes, anything by Pat Conroy, Michael Malone (handling sin is hysterical, the last noel is touching, and the mysteries are really good), Savannah Blues (Mary Kay Andrews?)is fun and campy, anything by Margaret Maron, the Mitford series by Jan Karon. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm also reading "Remeber" by Karen Kingsley. It's pretty sad at pints but that good

Thanks for all the great replies...I've read some of them but you gave me lots to think about that I haven't read :scratchin.

Thanks Again

Have you ever tried some of the alternative history books by Harry Turtledove? He's written some great "what if" series. The "Worldwar" and "Colonization" series focus on an earth invaded by aliens in 1942, his current "Great War" and "American Empire" series are about WWI and the aftermath where the Confederacy won the Civil War. "The Guns of the South" is a great single book where time travellers deliver a cache of AK-47s to Robert E. Lee.

Have you read "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom"? There was a thread about it not too long ago and I really liked it. If you are into sci-fi you will probably enjoy it.

If you liked Harry Potter, you should try "The Mirror of Her Dreams" by Stephen Donaldson. It is a fantasy novel, but definitely for adults.

Some authors that I highly reccommend have already been mentioned: Maeve Binchy, Fanny Flagg, Michael Crichton, John Grisham, etc.
