Hi,
In a few days my friend and her family will be heading to Disney for the first time. My friend suffers from Vertigo (NOT a fear of heights etc., but Vertigo) and I'm wondering what others suggest for rides/attractions she should avoid. I love every ride at Disney and Universal, so I'm not much help to her on this one!

Thanks! ::MickeyMo

Excellent question!! My husband just had vertigo and it was not fun!! I read somewhere that "amusement park type rides" could trigger it again. :earseek: His only other attack came "out of the blue", so any prevention you can think of would be great.

My sister gets pretty mild vertigo, and usually has meclazine with her. The only ride that really bothered her was Mission:Space. Tower of Terror wasn't great for her, but she recovered pretty quickly from that.

Good Luck

Jen

I suffer from benign positional vertigo and the only ride I've had to take off my list is Rock 'N Roller Coaster. That one just tosses my head around too much and leaves me dizzy for days :(

I don't get Vertigo, but I do get motion sick. I always ended up closing my eyes on Star Tours. I'm not much of a ride person, so this is the best I can do to help you ;)

I would HIGHLY suggest avoiding the teacups as well. Although I personally love them- as a nurse I know that they would probably throw anyone with vertigo over the edge!

I suffer from periodic bouts of vertigo but have never had trouble with the teacups; of course we don't spin them very fast. I would avoid TOT and definitely Body Wars; possible Star Tours as well.

I have atypical Meuniere's disease, which causes intermittent dizziness. The only problem I have is with the teacups - just can't do those anymore without suffering the effects.

Mission Space - been there done that: won't be going back. It didn't make me dizzy at all the first couple of times I rode it, but last summer it really bothered me. This was after the rumored "calming down" of the ride speed. Part of my problem with that one is that I am also somewhat clausterphobic (sp)- not a good combination!

I can ride Rock n'Roller Coaster as much as I like (which is a LOT) with no problems.

It's is really going to vary a lot by individual & what triggers the vertigo. Mine is an inner ear problem, but meclinzine does help.

i have menieres disease and i would suggest no teacups...mission space...space mountain....anything that goes round and round...i did tower of terror and i was ok...also rockin rollercoaster wasnt bad...i do take xanax sometimes if i know i am going to be riding those rides...

I get motions sickness and don't know much about vertigo, but I have a tip that might be useful. When it is not crowed (like late at night right before closing) Star Tours can do a "Flight Check." They'll put you and anyone else on that has motion issues --or is afraid like my DS--and you watch the movie but they don't turn on the simulator. I've ridden both ways and and was much happier after my "Flight Check."

My husband has Meniere's also. He avoids the teacups ( I think he gets bad off just watching me spin our son!) He has been on Mission Space and says it's okay after the take off. Buzz Lightyear's ride bothers him when you go through the tunnel, but not enough to stop riding it. He just closes his eyes when he gets to that part. He loves RnR and ToT. Over at Universal Islands of Adventure the Dueling Dragons roller coaster killed him. He usually carries a low dosage of valium with him to take before he is planning to go on rides he thinks may cause him any problems. He says to avoid Small world at any cost, but that has nothing to do with is vertigo..I don't know why he says that he takes a nap on it every year. :rotfl: :rotfl:

I have severe inner ear problems which is not quite the same but I'll give it a stab. I would avoid all motion simulators ie. star wars and body wars, they can make anyone sick. Also the tea cups can be really bad believe it or not. Ditto for the astro orbiter because of the hight. I don't do roller coasters anyway but they're probably not the greatest. Don't fret because I take my children and they go on everything, and I don't mind waiting around. A few more: Test track makes everyone green, and against my better judgement I went on mission space...it was a nightmare. I was ok with dinosaur, and splash mountain because my problem is I can't go in a circle because it triggers my ear, I think vertigo could be triggered with anything circular as well. Of course your friend can do all the rides in fantasy land like its a small world and snow white. Its tough to go by the park because according to the signs every ride causes dizziness. Oh yeah, don't know if you'll make it, but I was able to do Men in Black and universal with minor discomfort. but I had loads of trouble believe it or not with honey I shrunk the audience because the entire floor moves and makes you dizzy. spaceship earth was fine.

I hope this helps and doesn't seem too restrictive.
