Can a travel agent cancel a reservation without your knowledge?

Wow she needs to send you the confirmation ASAP. If nothing else it settles minds and repeat and recommended business is key in that industry I would guess

She wouldn't get repeat or recommended business from me!

(I have no dog in this fight but I went to school to be a TA just before the Internet TA boom, and was never able to get a job in the industry before I moved on to other things, so it irks me when people do dishonest things like this.)

I didn't know they could transfer it to me. That's what I would love to have happen. It was not booked through WDTC. Apparently she was using the agency's # without their permission. So she had to file for her own #. She got it and re booked.
I did not know this. So that means it's not paid in full. I was all excited b/c it let me check in online. So glad you told me that.

It could still be paid in full, but you don't have to wait for your package to be completely paid off to check in online. At the 60 day mark, it's open to all Disney resort guests, regardless of being paid off or not. But I do agree, three way calling Disney so they can be in on the conversation too may be the way to go.

I am with a big name TA and EVERY SINGLE TIME I made a payment with her, she would send me an email confirmation forward from Disney within minutes of my hanging up with her. That email has the total the trip cost, what payments have been made and what all if any is left. I got this each time when I was making payments and then this last time for our October trip, I got it straight away when I paid it all at once.

I agree with the PP that you can do online check in at 60 days, but final payment for packages is not due until 30 days, and room only the balance is due upon arrival. So the fact you can do check in does not necessarily mean your package has been paid at that time.

As a travel consultant I cringe when I see these posts. For all of my client bookings, I process the payments directly with the supplier so my clients can see immediately they are paid, along with sending supplier confirmations. Hopefully everything goes well for you as the moving of your reservations between IATA numbers seems very fishy to me. Disney does not allow transfers of reservations which is why she cancelled and rebooked you.

I would suggest that in the future you use a travel agency that is Ear Marked and processes payments directly to Walt Disney Travel Co. Good Luck!!

I use a TA for my trips. I have had no issues of any kind. She sets it up, gives me the Conf # then I review the MDE site check and make sure everything is how I wanted it. If I can't review the information on MDE, I would be really worried that I've been scammed.

Just means it doesn't HAVE to be. Not that it isn't.

She cancelled the trip with the agency and rebooked on her own after getting her TA#. Disney said it must be paid in full because I was allowed to check in online (which I did yesterday). They said if anything was owed then it wouldn't let me check in.

Whomever you spoke w at Disney is incorrect in paid in fill part for online check in. I booked direct with Mickey and I did online check in and my trip isn't paid in full.

I've booked with a TA (large agency). The TA simply passes the cc info to WDW Travel Co and my credit card statements always say WDW Reservations. Is that what your cc statement is showing? If it is, and you can see your reservation on MDE, then you are fine. I would be leery, though, if the payment went to the TA's "agency." Good luck and keep us posted.

Ughhh...I hate photobucket and the hassle it is to get my photos hosted elsewhere or I would post a photo of the letterhead that my emailed 'receipt' comes on. It is all from Disney but it just goes to my TA first.

I used to work at the Disney Reservations Center. When you make a booking through a travel agency, the reservation belongs to the agency, not the individual agent. If you travel agent moves to a new company, she or he shouldn't be taking your reservation unless both you and the original agency agree. As that didn't happen here, you will need to take a few steps to fix the problem.

First: Don't panic. While it's technically possible that the agent will scam you, that's a fairly serious crime. Based on the information provided, it doesn't sound like you are in danger of losing your money.

Second: Gather all your information (like both confirmation numbers) and call my former colleagues at the Reservations Center. Let the Cast Member know that you are concerned because the travel agent you are working with seems to have switched travel agencies without informing you. Provide the name of the (original) travel agency and ask if your reservation is booked under that name. You should be able to get that information.

(Hint: If the Cast Member seems confused, she or he might be fairly new. This is a bit of an unusual situation. If you get any resistance, ask to speak to a Supervisor. Make sure you say "Supervisor" and not "Manager". Those are two different roles. Managers manage people; Supervisors fix reservation problems.)

Third: If your reservation is still listed under the original travel agency, you're probably okay. However, if the travel agency has changed, ask to speak to a Supervisor (if you're not already talking to one). Ask about your options. Honestly, I'm not sure what those options will be. My best guess is that someone will want to call the original travel agency to verify that they agreed to let the agent keep your booking.

If the Supervisor asks for your contact information and says she or he will call you back, that's normal. Sometimes these thing take time to figure out. Once you call, all sorts of notes will be added to your reservation. That's a good thing, as it will protect you.

I'll echo the sentiment of other folks: I'm sorry you're having to deal with this issue. But, don't panic. Just call the Reservations Center and ask for help.

I use Dreams Unlimited Travel (the owners of these boards). When I provide my cc#, the charge is made directly from WDW, it does not go to the TA first. The only type of agency I would use is one who has the charges directly from WDW.

(Years ago, I had a friend who booked an entire vacation through Eastern Airlines. They'd paid in full. The airline never paid the hotel, rental car, etc., then went bankrupt. They lost everything. They had to rebook their entire vacation and pay once again.)

You don't have to do that anymore.

Hit reply. You see "upload a file" on the bottom.

It's like uploading a file anywhere else now. Right from the computer.

Testing this out, but here is what the letterhead from DCL looks like and my email says: FWD: Reservation Confirmation (insert reservation #) for DisneyMommyMichelle.

Basically I pay the TA, she in turn pays WDW and they e-mail her a receipt which she forwards to me!

Fast learner ;)

The full image option when uploading makes it look like this...

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question. We've booked with a TA for the first time. It was a great deal so we took the plunge and paid upfront for our trip. Since then our reservations have dropped off several times. She then sends me a new conf #. She wasn't paying - just rebooking. I called to Disney to see if my current reservation had been paid in full. They said because it was booked by a TA they can't see that information and that only the TA can make changes to my reservation and that the reservation isn't technically mine until I check into the resort. So here's the question - would it be possible for her to cancel my reservation and my family show up to Disney and find we have no reservation? How do I know that she has paid in full without simply taking her word for it? I have a receipt showing I paid her but nothing showing she paid Disney.

Although I don't have an answer for you, my heart goes out to you. I pray that everything goes the way as YOU planned.

We may be talking about two separate things. The IATA is an agency identifier number. Agencies give that to Disney so they know which agency booked the reservation and where to send the commission.

The real question is who processed your payment. Did the TA take payment directly and then pay (or not pay)Disney? Or did the TA give your cc info directly to Disney for payment (this is the way most agencies work). Again, I would check your cc statement to see who processed the charges and how much was charged. If WDW processed the charges, you may have nothing to worry about.

I still hope you can get the reservation transferred to yourself, however. This TA is highly unethical.

Disney travel agents should be processing payment directly through Disney. That would give you a credit card statement with the charge to Disney and you would see if it's paid in full. Also her canceling your reservation would simply refund the money to you, not her, and therefore would make it impossible for your money to be stolen.
