We are planning trip to New York City...won't have a car..so will need to take cab to hotel...can 5 people ride in one cab?..I know we have in Orlando but in other places have had to call cab co for a van..

There are mini-vans in NYC that you can take, the kind with three rows of seats. Just look for those!

There are some SUV-type cabs that can seat more people; there is no number to call to request one (that I know of), you just have to look for them. However, if you have small kids the driver of a regular cab may let you put 1 adult & 3 kids in the backseat and the other adult sit in the front seat.

I assume you are taking a cab from the airport - just a word of warning, only go to the official taxi stand/line where the yellow cabs line up. There are people at the airports who approach travelers as they exit the building & offer to take them to a cab. Usually its a gypsy cab & they will charge you more than the yellow cabs. (There is a flat rate on yellow cabs from the airports into Manhattan, I think it's around $45.)

I was just in NYC on Thursday. there were a lot of mini van cabs riding around.

I know we watch the show Cash Cab(which is filmed in NYC) on Discovery. It is set in a minivan-style cab with a bench at the back and two captain's chairs in the middle. So I would guess this type of van configuration is at least somewhat common ? :confused3

Thanks! I didn't know there were mini van cabs just driving around..
that will work!

Yep, I was just in NYC last week & there were a bunch of minivan cabs. Even took one :)

Actually, it is against the law in NYC. The max number of people in a cab including the driver is five. Some drivers will take you anyway but when you get in the cab line at the airport they may not allow it.
I don't know what airport you are flying into but for five people it is easy and economical to hire a car service. Last month I flew into Newark and we took the Air Train to Penn Station. That worked well but I had my husband to carry the luggage. Ha! Ha! When I travel to NYC with my family I often use a car service. I've used Dial 7 recently. I have used others and the only one I won't use again so far is Carmel Car Service. Do not take Super Shuttle, you'll spend hours in the van.

Yes, illegal but they sometimes they sneak one extra in.

Guidelines:

A child under 7 is allowed to sits on a passenger's lap in the rear seat in addition to the 4 passenger limit.
A passenger is allowed to sit in the front seat with the driver when three passengers have filled the rear.
