Cam's New Lease on Life Journal (comments welcome!)

Thank you, Jen & Tracey!
I did 2.9 miles today on the treadmill. I ran about 20% of the time, varying between walking speeds of 4.0-4.2 mph and jogging speeds of 4.8-5.0 mph. Very satisfying. Pace was about 13:48, I think.
Training now for 2 5Ks in March. The one on 3/3 is the first 5K course I ever did. It was in March 2005 and my finish time was 54:52 (pace 17:42). The one I'm doing on 3/17 I did the past two years with finish times of 51:43 (pace 16:41) and 43:33 (pace 14:03), respectively. The 43:33 is still my PR on a 5K race and I have 8 weeks to train to beat that time on that course. It would be great to beat it on the 3/3 course, which is a bit tougher, with hills. It's nice to have a goal, though.

Food today:
B: WW oatmeal (core); powerade at gym
S: banana
L: salad w/ff feta and kalamata olives and olive oil

You are officially back on track :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: I'm so glad you had a good TM day. Your 5K's sound good. You can beat your PR. I know you can do it. :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Thank you guys! I really appreciate your support! :grouphug:
We have had such a great weekend and it is hard to see it coming to an end. DH is driving DD18 back to campus after our trip to NY today to see Les Mis. It was just so wonderful to be there as a family. Other good stuff going on too.
Last night was Family Bunco night at DS13's school and since it is his last and DH is the president of the Dads' organization that co-sponsored it, DH, DS and I all went. DS and I attended Mass while DH helped last minute set-up, then we all had dinner. I forewent pizza altogether and just had a small caesar salad. I drank water most of the night instead of soda too. They did about 20 door prizes all night and I won 2 of them -- a $50 GC to Red Lobster and a $10 GC to Starbucks. Then we won the 50/50! I was almost embarassed going up for the 3rd time with a winning ticket and it was $216!! How fun! It was nice to give DD an extar $50 today for spending money at school and DS got a new PSP game. I was worried last night that people would be resentful but we got the nicest congratulations comments, saying we do so much for the school, that it couldn't have happened to a more deserving family, etc. The nice recognition compliments made me feel richer than Midas and were definitely more valuable than the prizes.

Food yesterday ended with canadian bacon (on plan)

Today's food was harder, but I expected that:
B: canadian bacon, coffee w/skim milk
L(Italian restaurant in NY): fried calamari, italian bread, steamed broccoli, small pc chicken parm with cheese taken off; 1/3 large piece ricotta cheesecake, coffee w/cream
D (I didn't eat pizza with the family at the NY pizza place before coming home, but had tastes of crust). In the car I had canadian bacon & a banana. At home I had veggie barley soup and some fresh made turkey chili
We walked a LOT in NYC today, so I know between APs and WPAs I am still on track to finish my first core week.

Back on track completely tomorrow. I won't get to the gym until Tuesday night, but am looking forward to that.

Wow! The scale was up 2.8 today from yesterday!!! I HAVE to persuade myself it was the lack of water yesterday and that it will level out again in a day or two. UGH! I told DH about it and he said "how can that be? you really didn't eat that much yesterday." I am convinced my body just does not know how to process the "bad stuff" like cheesecake and pizza crust. Plus I ate after 10 pm last night because we got home late, I was hungry, and I was cooking food for the week. I will definitely be absolutely perfectly on core today and hope things are better tomorrow morning.

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk; WW oatmeal
L: turkey chili; garden salad w/FF dressing & hard-boiled egg; grapefruit
D: "oven fried" potatos (w/olive oil); grilled chicken; brown rice w/veggies

It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend, Cam!:cloud9: Congrats on all of your winnings!:thumbsup2

That does seem kind of strange that the scale would be up..... You're doing such a great job on Core and with your exercising! :yay: I bet after drinking some water, it will go right back down to where it is supposed to be.:goodvibes

Have a great day today, Cam!

I did my oven fried potatoes and grilled chicken and all was going well. Then, I decided to make brown rice and pan "fried" it (in pam) and added soy sauce and some diced carrots, peas & corn for a core friendly fried rice dish. I was going to save it for today, but a friend called right when I would have been going downstairs to the TM and I ended up talking on the phone and eating lots of "fried rice" instead of TMing. UGH! Got off the phone in time to watch "the Class" and "Heroes" and then was sending out marathon weekend pix until after 11, so no workout last night and I broke a core rule of having both brown rice and potato in one day. Hopefully, the scale will still be friendly at WI tonight! I noticed I was short one fat-free milk serving yesterday. I'll have to be careful today to get the two required servings in.

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk
9:30 -- WW brown sugar flavored oatmeal
11:35 (so hungry!) -- large banana
L (1:45): green salad; hard-boiled egg; brown rice w/veggies; grilled chicken
D: turkey chili, mixed veggies; small chicken breast
dessert: 8 oz skim milk

I am having an unbelievably hungry day, with my stomach growling so loudly I think people passing my office can hear it. I am going to have to be more conscientious about adding carbs to my lunches (with the protein) to get it to hold me longer. I should NOT be this hungry less than an hour after I finished eating!

Hi Cam
your wekend sounded wonderful I'm glad you had some great quality family time :)
Well done on all the winnings too, lucky you! :)
I'm sure the scale will go back down again.
My friend is doing the core & is going to let me look at her literature, from what she's explained i think i'm doing it already!!!
Have a great week

Thank you, Tracey and Tracy! :goodvibes:
Weigh in was a little disappointing until I reminded myself of all those delicious splurges. I was down 1.4. Every little bit helps!

I did a great TM workout tonight.
5 minutes warm up at 4.0 mph (.33 miles)
3.14 miles at walk 3.5 mins. at 4.0-4.2 mph/jog 1.5 mins. at 5.0 mph with some longer jogging sessions mixed in. Total time 42:25 (pace 13:31)
Hoping to get this pace down solid and then to improve it before my 5K on 3/17 on the course where I have my 5K PR of 43:33. The pace tonight would yield a finish time of 42 minutes solid. I'd like to do even better than that. We'll see how the training goes.

:cool1:  :dance3: :cheer2:
Well done on losing the 1.4 lb's Cam :)

Looks like your on track with the TM, all those numbers make me dizzy though!! I never look at that when i'm on the TM!
Just how many cals i've burnt!!! - Thats why i'd be no good as a runner!
Have a good week :)

Congrats on the 1.4 lb loss! A loss is a loss, so don't be too down. :cheer2:  Sounds like you had a lovely weekend with your family.

Hey Cam.

It must be something in the air here on the DIS... I was down 1.4 pounds this week too! Congratulations!:yay:

Hope you have a great Thursday! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Last night, after dinner, I realized I was short on a F/V and healthy oils, so I decided to have a small salad w/olive oil and chicken breast & FF parmesan. It was really good, and I didn't feel stuffed. For dessert I did something sweet, but then DH wanted lite popcorn while we watched "Devil Wears Prada." Eating popcorn at 10:30 at night isn't the best decision, but the scale was still down another .3 this morning.

Yesterday was a rest day on my training plan, but I'm going to the gym tonight to do 3 miles on the TM again. I am also going to get back in the habit of doing the elliptical and I want to add weight training again.

Food today:

B: ham steak; coffee w/skim milk
L: mixed steamed chinese veggies, plain (co-workers were ordering in and I felt so left-out and here was finally a place I could order takeout from with no guilt and without going off-plan; so, I'll eat my "lunch" for dinner before I leave here to go to the gym)
S: banana; hard boiled egg
D: green salad w/grilled chicken breast; mixed veggies; turkey chili; ham steak
Dessert: 2.5 pepperidge farm cookies (4); pretzels (2); SF chocolate covered almonds (2)

Used 8 weekly WPAs, leaving 25 to get me through until Tuesday

No gym time

Well done on the loss Cam :)
AND after popcorn - i only have to look at that & gain!!!
Your doing fantastic with food & exercise, keep up the great work :)

Good job ordering something on plan. :thumbsup2 Hard to not eat popcorn when it is right there. How was the movie?

Have fun at the gym tonight :thumbsup2

Hi, Tracey! Yeah, I've heard it just sits in your stomach and absorbs water, so you feel full, but you also stay full for a while! ;) I also weigh "UP" considerably after popcorn.

Oh, and, Anna, the movie was great, but the book is a zillion times better. Meryl Streep was perfect in the role, but they really should have let her take it to an even worse level. What a gorgeous woman, too! It gives me hope that we can actually improve with age! BTW, Meryl Streep was my graduation speaker at college and was absolutely brilliant!

After an extremely stressing day at work and not leaving the office until 8, I reverted to old habits and stress-ate. I did okay at first -- green salad w/grilled chicken and fat free soy parmesan & ff italian dressing w/2 tsp olive oil (WW requirement for healthy oil). Then, I was still hungry, so I ate a small ham steak. While it was cooking I ate some turkey chili (still all core up to here, but more volume than I should have eaten). Then I lost my willpower when I was getting some fat free pretzels w/brown mustard and spotted the pepperidge farm cookies my aunt sent us when my FIL died. Immediately considered it comfort food, told myself I needed comfort, and ate 2.5 cookies. UGH!!! When DH and DS got home I told DH about the work stress and we talked about stressful parenting issues and I again went to the cupboard, this time for low fat microwave popcorn and two SF chocolate covered almonds . All the while telling him how bad I knew I was being and DS doing the "tsk, tsk, those cookies are not core" thing. I figure it was 8 of my 35 point weekly allowance. After my SF chocolate covered almonds the night before (2 pts), I still have a 25 point cushion.
Yeah, confession is good for the soul. Sure. I'm not even hungry yet this morning. I'll be good today. I promise.

Work has been so busy and I haven't gotten to the gym since Tuesday night. I have really come to rely on that stress outlet and my failure to carve time out to workout is negatively impacting not just my body, but my emotional and mental well-being, too. What an incredible "need" to have. I really hope I feel like this for a long time to come.

All that being said, I have to get back on track. I'll get up early to go to the gym tomorrow and then come in to work to relieve some of the pressure of the to-do list getting so large.

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk
L: green salad w/grilled chicken breast; turkey chili
S: banana
S: coffee w/skim milk
D: 1 slice spinach, tomato & ricotta pizza; pretzels, baked lays, multi-grain tortilla chips, 2 girl scout sugar free brownie bites, 1 girl scout tagalong cookie

 Cam,

I hope today is a wonderful day for you... It is Friday, you know!:cool1:

Exercise is a wonderful stress reliever!:yay: I know that on the days I don't get some kind of exercise in, I have a tendency to turn to my comfort foods to relieve stress. The funny thing is that it doesn't relieve the stress, it causes more stress when I think about what my food binge might have done to the scale.:scared:

Please don't worry too much about the extra food. You have done an excellent job all week long and you are still within your points range..:goodvibes

Have a great weekend!
