We'll be driving to Florida the last week of June. I'll be the only driver so I plan to take 3 days to get there safely. It occurred to me that I might be able to save money by camping along the way rather than paying for a hotel. Does anyone know of safe campgrounds along the 81-77-26-95 route, or thereabouts? Many thanks. :)

My sister just drove from Syracuse to Orlando and made it in 20 hours. You could drive two ten hour days and only need one night on the road. Even if you drove 8 am -8 pm allowing for stops for lunch, dinner you should still make it in two days. I know ten hours is alot of driving in one day but I would be more tired driving 7 hours and then killing time before sleeping in hotel just to think about having to do it again before arriving in Orlando.

If flights come down for your travel dates would you fly? How many people beside you are going? I had flights with Delta last year, May for $155 and July for $118.

You could check the KOA website for camping areas but that would mean alot of other stuff to bring, sleeping bags, tent etc to save a few bucks. Have to weigh your options and decide what works for you.

Thanks. We'll be staying in Florida for 4-5 weeks, so it makes sense to drive and have our own vehicle down there. I did think of KOA today (duh me) and they do have a few good prospects along the way. I'd like to make it in 2 days but don't want to count on it - this will be the first major road trip for all of us (the farthest we've been previously was Boston/Gloucester, and we took 2 days to get there!) so I'm not sure how we'll handle it.

BTW, my name is Lori as well - for a second there I thought I'd somehow responded to my own post!

I just have to jump in here...another "Laurie" from central NY! I am driving also, but in 28 days and with a second driver. Have a great time on your trip!

Are you talking about pitching a tent after a 10 hour drive? You can get some pretty inexpensive motel rooms these days and commercial campgrounds can be pretty pricey. Usually you can get a discount coupon booklets at the visitor centers that you see as you cross each state-line. They will often even book a room for you. To me it would be worth it to pay $20 - $30 more and have the convienience of not having to set up and break camp (not to mention having a tv and not having to bring camping equipment).

Here is a site that might help you with your drive:
