Campbell's Soup Paper Dress

My husband likes to watch the show American Pickers (where they find junk, buy it, and resale it). It was on tonight and caused me to remember something I have hanging in my closet - a Campbell's Soup Paper Dress.

It's never been worn but isn't in new, pristine condition. For many years, it was folded up in a drawer and has some places where the paper has come apart.

I did some googling and saw that the dresses in new condition have sold for quite a bit of money. Does anybody know if a dress like the one I have is worth anything? If it is, where is the best place to sell it (I checked ebay but only saw one that was brand new - it sold for a little over $2000, but they've sold for much more in other auctions).

Just curious...

I was pretty certain I saw one of those on the Antique's Roadshow one time. I did a quick search on the PBS website and they had an appraisal from 2004.

Thanks for the reply! That was one of the links I looked at. That guy's is probably in better shape than mine, but I'm hoping mine is worth something at least. I just don't know enough to know where to sell it other than ebay. :confused3

Go to an antique shop in your area. They may be able to get you in contact with an auction company.

I'll check around and try to find somebody (I'm waayyy out in the country, so I'm not too sure how something like this would sell in this area).

I did look at the Cash and Cari show website a little while ago. They had a place on their site that allows you to upload pictures and tell them about your item. It it interests them, they'll appraise it for you. I thought that might be worth a try.

I may wind up putting it on ebay (may be the only option I come up with), but based on the couple of auctions I saw on there, the price is better if it's somewhere else. And, because mine isn't in perfect condition, it may not be worth much of anything. It would be nice to find a site that could get a nice price for it though.

I would call a mid-century antiques store in Palm Springs. We weekend there often and have seen this dress in various states of wear fro sale at different price-points.

And may I just say how lucky you are! I would love to have such a dress and I would encase it in a two-way frame and have it as a decoration in my living room. We collect and decorate in MCM and some 1960's items.

Would you be just interested in selling it to a dealer or having it repaired? I would guess that any of the high-end dealers on the main boulevard there would know someone who could do repairs.

I'm not sure how someone could go about repairing it, and I'm afraid to do anything to it. I saw on some of the links that I looked at that people had done just what you mentioned with the framing.

Quite honestly, it wouldn't fit in with my decor (read that as shabby country! :rotfl2:). My daughter recieved an abstract painting as a wedding gift from one of our family members that cost $1000 (she loves abstracts). Her DH doesn't quite know what to make of it though! She said that she doesn't even have to worry about insuring it because any thief way out here wouldn't look at it twice.

I will definitely do some googling and try to contact a dealer who might be interested in buying it. I would love to get a decent price for it and that sounds like a real option. Thanks so much for giving me some direction!

I wish you the best of luck in selling it and I hope you get a good price.

Handbag Lady, I already have one person who has responded and is interested in seeing pictures. Thank you again!
