Camera vs IPhone along with PhotoPass+???

I agree based on your new definition of decent. The iphone can't touch a top-of-the-line prosumer grade P&S camera.

lol. Both shots were on full auto. For the P&S, I think it used a shutter speed of 1/8th. (Can check the exif).
At 1/8th shutter speed, and without image stabilization, every shot I take would have motion blur. My hands simply aren't very steady.
(Thank goodness for image stabilization on the dSLR!)

The iphone used a much faster shutter speed, and was therefore able to get a steady image.

Nearing 30 days til our first trip w family... As we countdown, a question that we wrestle with is whether we need a camera for the trip. Have signed up for photo pass+ and will have 2 IPhones.

Would you bring camera in addition to photo pass +?
Will the Disney photographers be wiling to take pics with our phones?

Back to the original question:

I am an avid hobby photographer going to DLR with my family. I wouldn't dream of going without my D90, even with 2 iphones and PP+.

Reasons:
-my iphone has crappy white balance. Many photos have too much blue.
-my hubby can't take a decent pic to save his live if we relied on his phone.
-park photographers are not located everywhere you may want to take a picture. I prefer to take pictures of my family that are more personal feeling, not just posed in front of something.
-I want to be able to take my own photos that have good enough resolution to be printed large enough to hang on a wall.


If you are looking for a smaller camera, or a good prosumer P&S, this is what I had for 3 years before my DSLR. I took a lot of good photos with it over the years.

It has the same manual control functions as a DSLR with a reduced range in the functions.

I think the OP bailed long ago! I am still here even though I introduced the iphone into to debate.

I enjoy alot of the convo/debate in the photography forum but it has made deciding which direction I personally want to go with a new camera more difficult to an extent. But also more informed. The iPhone certainly doesn't meet all my needs, in particular low light situations.

I think what some of the more enthusiastic/dedicated/experienced photographers on the boards sometimes forget is that a lot of people will never edit their photos or even delete really bad ones (I am guilty of this ). I think many people get plenty of enjoyment from seeing and sharing their photos on Facebook or as a screen saver on their computers. If it wasn't for the popularity of scrapbooking I am not sure alot of families would even bother printing their pics anymore.

Anyway, I have learned a lot following the discussions on the photography board!

The most important thing to remember if you want good photos.... is to take a LOT of photos. Now that we are in the digital age, other than the shutters wearing out, not much penalty for spray and pray... Kids seldom cooperate.

Nope, not at all. I have looked it up and found out it is a somewhat common problem. You can try to trick it by changing the focal point or your angle, but there is no adjustment function. I didn't really notice until it was too late to trade it in for a different one.

I have yet to find an app that allows for WB adjustment, most only have WB lock. Any adjustments need to be done in post processing, which isn't worth the time for phone pictures.

I have one on my work iphone, and the wife has one on her's, but other than snapping lack luster pics of whiteboards at work, I don't use it for real photography if that's what you mean. I know the right tool for a job, and use it.

That's funny. I consider myself a real photographer.

My RAZR's camera comparable to the iphone5's and slightly better than my family's two iphone 4's... however it leaves a LOT to be desired, and I've never been happy with anything out of it. I know, a poor craftsman blames his tools, but a rock can serve as a hammer too.. If I'm deliberately going to take a picture vs. a snapshot, I go for a camera, not a camera-phone.

As I've taken snapshots with my iphone, my wife's iphone, and my RAZR, I'd say that gives me "experience"
