Camera recommendations

I also use my iPhone as a p&s, I have been using a Nikon D200 while I saved up for a Nikon 3200 which I will hopefully buy this week:)

Like Ms Shuttergirl I will have the camera set in auto for most of the trip but I love having the option if I have more time to do more with a shot.

Going shopping Saturday! Leaving the kids and husband at home and taking my dad (who is a Nikon man through and through) to the city to buy it. Not sure what configuration to get yet, I might buy just the body and use the lens I have on the D200 and look at lenses in NY. I was tossing up between the 3200 and the D90 but the 3200 has auto focus video which will be a good feature for me. What do you use? I loved your trip report shots!

woohoo for camera shopping without kids! :cool1:

What lens do you currently have? It is worth having a look at the prices of lens in the US, especially if you are considering more expensive ones. B&H in NY is amazing!!! I've got a D90 and the majority of my shots were taken with my 18-200mm. I just don't have the time to change lens with 3 kids hanging off me. Thank you for the compliments by the way :goodvibes

meandmygirl....so sorry for hijacking your thread!

We are taking the Canon 60D and I am trying to narrow it down to two lenses, but I wont be carting this everyday. We also have a Canon S95 that I love and carry that in my bag everywhere.

Shushh - I had an 18 - 70 on the camera I was using ....

But now I have a brand new RED D3200 with an18-55 lens. Loving it so far (it's been about 4 hours!) Haven't loaded any pics onto the computer to see how they are coming up. The video function seems good so far:)

Congratulations :cool1:!!! And red is my favourite colour.

You'll have to share some pics with us all soon.

That is a gorgeous photo!! and Olivia is a sweetie :)

My little girl had lovely long hair like that at around the same age - she's 23 now but I think she'd still have fun blowing bubbles too :)

Thanks:) She is a sweetie.

Gorgeous photos, nice rich colour which the Nikon's are known for. I'm sure you will love the camera.

And on a side note, my daughter's name is Olivia too and she is 14 now and the most delicious girl. Still has the long hair, but blond.

It was another reason I loved your trip report:) Never enough Olivias in the world! I haven't taken a good photo of my other little girl Alexis yet because staying still is not on her daily schedule!

Edited to say: have added a photo if Alexis to Flickr, not a great shot but I felt bad only having one child represented;)

This reply is so late... But nevertheless Olivia is beautiful! And an equally beautiful capture. I too was thinking how beautiful rich the colours are. Hope you are enjoying your new baby!

Thanks Shushh:) Took the camera out and about to see Mali in the City (the elephant statues painted by different artists to celebrate Melbourne Zoo's 150 years) and just on auto it takes great pictures! So happy because I love having the ability to play with it but also love being able to stick it on auto and enjoy the moment!

I've been looking at making the step up from my Canon p&s to a dslr and have found the price difference between here and the US incredible! Specifically I'm looking at a Nikon 3200 and B&H in New York has some great deals. Is it foolish to wait until I get there to buy a new camera or should I just suck up the difference and buy now and get to know it before I go?

I thought the same thing, I decided to buy it here so I could learn how to use it. I am still looking at getting a few accessories at B&H. Also I am going to WDW first so would have had to have the camera shipped which made me nervous. It's up to you I guess - the savings are big...

NY is my first stop this trip so I wouldn't have to worry about shipping it. Something to think on I guess (I can be very indecisive about things sometimes!).

There are Australian internet stores based in Hong Kong that ship to Australia. I've used one of these on several occasions and found them to be fantastic. Much cheaper.

I would really strongly advise against getting a DSLR whilst overseas. You definitely need to know your camera pretty well (including its strengths and weaknesses and that of the lenses) as dabecs said. Give yourself ample time to study it and look at online tutorials. YouTube has quite a few.

If you were going to buy the DSLR in the US then I wouldn't bother and just stick to your P&S. If you bought a DSLR overseas you'd probably end up taking most shots on auto not knowing your camera well and therefore there's really no point in having it. A DSLR's strength is its ability to allow you to manage and control the settings, depth of field, shutter speed, and exposure. If all of this is new to you then you definitely need to know your DSLR before the trip.

PS: as for the financial question, I'd rather spend that extra here (if I bought from a bricks and mortar store) and know my camera so I can get the shots I want rather than getting there and ending up with shots that I was disappointed with because I wasn't familiar with the camera. Only you can answer this. If you want to take photos on auto then perhaps a more expensive P&S like the S100 may be better - since it's a lot smaller. If you want that manual and creative control then DSLR all the way!!!
