...Why is this so hard?

Because bags are not cheap and you do not want to have to buy 10 of them to find that one. I now understand why women buy so many purses. By the way I am on my 3rd bag in 3 years (they keep getting bigger) so I am not any better. The trick is to find a bag that has everything you want and hope it fits within your budget.

I started my search by going to a local mom & pop camera shop which had a large bag selection. I found the Tamrac Adventure 9 and It seemed to have all the room I needed. My search moved online to where I found it for $103 at Amazon w/ free shipping. It was listed as USED, but it arrived brand new with tags in the Tamrac plastic bag. So, you might be able to find a deal online.

Which software depends on what you need it for. Image management? RAW processing? Light editing? Heavy editing?

With the education discount Lightroom is $99. Really not bad price wise.

Download the 30 day trial, or the LR3 beta, and get a feel for it. Also check out Bibble. It's very similar to Lightroom but some find it a little easier to use.

Scott Kelby's Lightroom manual. QUOTE]

I just finished reading this book. It helped me learn what all the sliders can do. I found the book to be a very helpful learing tool in terms of processing photos.

I love the organizational side of the program as well. Well worth it in my opinion. There is a free Lightroom 3 Beta available on Adobe Labs site. It will expire once the next beta or full version is released. If I did not already have LR2 I would get the beta now and upgrade to the full version once it is released.

Lightroom is an awesome program. I loved it from the very first pic I edited with it. Its organizational aspect is easy to use and I can't imagine what a mess my photo organization would be without. For the basics of the program if you want a step by step guide to the modules look into getting Classroom in a Book. I got from Amazon for about $35 and it comes with a dvd lesson guide. It was very helpful in getting me started with using the program more effectively.

After having my T1i for almost a year, I just recently downloaded the trial version of Lightroom; after mainly just using the Canon DPP software. But I love it. After really figuring out the DPP software, I really thought it was great for what I wanted to do.......... until I started using Lightroom. I haven't taken complete advantage of the organization; but processing-wise, it's great. Not only with the amount of adjustments you can do, but the layout is very user friendly.

I've also had GIMP for a while (a Free, not-quite-as-powerful-as-Photoshop software), but I felt you had to dig too much to make somewhat basic adjustments. I mainly only used it for borders, straightening and vignette anyway. Now that I know LR can do all of that, GIMP will get deleted soon.

I'll jump ahead of the gun and say 'congrats on getting Lightroom'. :thumbsup2

Odd thing is I ended up getting my gear to fit in mine, with just a few modifications. I did make a list of your ideas for the next one I need to buy (cause im a junkie, and will end up with more lenses than bag space). I ended up qith a profoto bag.

I am jumping in because I have a question, when editing if I want them in a 4 x 6 do I select the 2 4 x 6 option or the 4 x 6 download option? I will be ordering the CD and then printing!

If you are planning to order the CD, then just do them as a single 4x6.

Just be sure to do any and all editing on all photos before ordering the CD, including making any copies with borders, etc.

I just finished turning 75 photos into 550 before ordering my CD, LOL I like to get my moneys worth (which thankfully was only $99 since I had a code). Glad it's DONE--took me weeks of working on it to get it done before deadline!

Mikeeee - I really like that bag but how oxy is it? Is it heavy when loaded and bulky or no? I would be carrying it every time I use my camera so Im looking for perfection.

what does "oxy" mean?

it weighs about a quarter pound when empty... mine weighs about 15 pounds with my gear. Or so it feels... 55 pounds at the end of the day. Heheheeee

I forget oxy is a local thing. You know like dosent fit nice where you want to carry it, odd shape, hard to hold on to.

Heheheheee

its one of the most comfortable bags I have used. It has a wide shoulder/belt strap and a padded handle on top.
