We are looking for a digital camcorder for our son for his birthday. MiniDV is generally more $$ than a digital8, is it really that much better? DS is turning 13, and wants a camcorder he can edit on the computer. Will a digital8 do the trick, or do we need to go with the miniDV? Any suggestions?? Thanks!

Digital-8 will do just fine, as long as you get one with a "firewire" or "iLink" connection.

Plus the Hi8/Digital8 tapes are cheaper. :)

The issue is size vs cost.

8 is bigger so are cameras but they cost less so do the tapes.
I went with 8mm for the lower cost of tapes

I do editing on the PC and it works very well.

Thanks for the feedback. I think we will probably go with the digital8. Sounds like it would be just fine for DS.

That was a great link you provided, Dan! Thanks!

I have a Sony digital 8, with the firewire cable and we use it with studio DV to edit and it works great. You can also record on regular 8mm tapes, but they won't transfer to the computer, so make sure you get the hi-8/digital 8 tapes.
