Today I called out sick from both of my jobs. I have a pretty bad cold. Now, I have gone to work as sick as I am today in the past, but today I needed a day at home. I called in from my day job last night as I usually do to give my supervisor a chance to find a sub. This morning I get a call from my co-worker telling me that she sprained her ankle and wasn't going in. Although she didn't come right out and say it, the implication was that I should go in. She calls out quite frequently and I hardly ever do. I told her that I was in fact sick and not going in. So, bottom line....our 14 MR adults are left with not one but 2 subs. I feel a bit guilty, but knowing that with the flu shots as hard to come by as they are this year, and germs running rampant around our program it is probably best that I am home.

Anyone else suffer from the slightly guilty conscience syndrome even when you are sick or am I the only one?

Oh yeah, definately. I hate calling out sick too because I always feel guilty. But don't worry, life goes on and they will manage without you! Sometimes you just need rest. Hope you feel better soon!

I think you did the right thing. It sounds like you work with a group that may have individuals who are more at risk. As such, if you feel bad enough to consider calling out, you should.

I can understand the guilt - it speaks much of your ethics. I, too, rarely call in sick. When I do, it is only if I know I would not miss anything important and that there would be people who could handle the things that could not wait until my return. It always irritates me that some people seem to have no such concerns and will stay home for a hang nail usually leaving those who do make it in with even more work to get done.

From another point of view: I think your co-workers should be glad you stayed home instead of coming and and possibly infecting them. This is a sore spot today around here. TWO people came in obviously very sick...one co-worker said please stay home with your germs.

I am immunosuppressants and do not need to get sick.

I hope you feel better!
