Calling in sick for work

It would be nice to simply call my supervisor if I am sick...but my employer has a built in deterant in place. If you need to miss work, you are expected to find your own coverage. If you call your supervisor without having made a significant attempt at finding someone to fill in, then you can be disciplined. When you contact your supervisor, you must provide her with the names and responses of the people you have spoken with.

The process of finding a replacement is so daunting, that it ends up with people just choosing to go to work ill and suffering through the day.

I work in health care!!! So...imagine, your medical provider being more ill than the patients...it happens.

What if you are too ill to call around?

There has to have been something quite urgent occur to call the supervisor without having found a replacment.

Some examples: I called my supervisor when my son broke his finger and I felt it would be best to have it evaluated rather than sending him off to daycare.... She wanted to know who I had contacted to cover....at that point I hadn't called anyone, my son was screaming in pain. I had to call around, but thankfully I found someone willing to cover for the first 3 hours of my shift.

I had pneumonia last winter. I was pretty sick, called my supervisor, she wanted to know what I had done to cover my shift. I told her I was simply too sick to call people. She let me get by with it for one day. I was scheduled again 3 days later, had improved a little, so I just decided to go in and work, it would be easier than facing the 3rd degree from my supervisor.

I've worked for this employer for 3 years, these are the only 2 times I have ever called in. I would like to think that considering I don't have a pattern of abusing my sick days, that I could be given the benefit of the doubt. If I am calling in, there must be a real problem. But, alas, because others have abused the system, we are all considered to be lying about the circumstances of our call in and are perhaps just trying to play hookie....
