Calling Home when in Disney

As a complete ignoramus in these matters, can I just ask how the phone card works - do you put it in the pay phone and it takes credit off or do you have to dial a number on the card first (like using the 1p a minute providers)?

You dial the access number 1st then the UK number you want, yes like using the 1p/min numbers to US.:thumbsup2

Hi All :)

This is my first post!! I have been lurking on here for a few weeks and thought it was about time to join.

I have a question regarding calling home. Last year when me and my BF went we spent a fortune calling home on our mobiles :(

What does everyone else do to keep in touch with their families but not spend a fortune?

We did think about using skype but don't want to take a laptop so we are struggling with ideas... please help!:confused3

welcome!!

i use a prepay mobile phone that i bought a few years ago at walmart when i was visiting...
i have it stored away and then anyone in the family who goes to the states, takes it with them....
it's not a very fancy model, but it works for this purpose....
i mainly have it so that i can receive calls from home and for making local calls while in the US...

The first time that we went, I got an international phone card from my local Co-op travel agent. This can be used on any public phone, by first dialing a code and then your international home number, Last year I took a small Samsung netbook with Skype loaded, this year will be the same. I also intend to take my i-Phone with Skype loaded for when we are in a 'free' wifi area. If you have an i-phone remember when in USA to turn off data roaming or you may be in for a big shock when your next bil arrives.:scared1:

how do i turn off the data roaming on my iPhone?

Can you use the prepaid cards from your hotel room phone or do you need to use a public payphone?

Not sure with Disney hotels, is there a connection charge? We used one in a condo we rented no problem.

When we stayed in the GF last year we used IDT phonecards (someone gave them to us) from our standard room and nothing came up on our bill :thumbsup2

I was quite surprised but we did it a few times and were never charged so don't think it was just a lucky mistake!
