Calling all techies.. I am in trouble.

I have cable modem, but something is not right there so I am on my dial up.. I keep getting flashed this message, which might as well be in a foreign language, I have no idea what it means..

System has detected a conflict for ip number 24.61.44.134 with the system having hardware address 00:40:10:0F:E5:7D

do you you know what that means.. and how can I stop it.. *big whine*

It sounds like your cable ISP assigned someone else your router's (modem's) IP address.

Call them and see.

This is a guess and Alex knows more about this stuff than I do. I would try calling them first.

OK. it is all better. LOL It must have been a cable problem because just now I came back on the cable came up.. and no message.. Thanks for trying to help me..

You might not be out of the woods just yet. It could be that the person sitting at the other computer with the same conflict message turned theirs off, allowing yours to come online.

That message indicates that there are two pieces of hardware on the same network with the same ID. Most likely, the number displayed in the message is the 'firmware address' of your Ethernet Adaptor, which gets registered by your cable company. The manufacturers are supposed to have adaptor addresses assigned in ranges, but once in awhile, they get a conflict, even within the same manufacturer. I retired from a large company that ordered hundreds of adaptors at the same time from a particular manufacturer and once in awhile, we'd have a duplicate address and have to return it, because it would never be able to work that way with a conflict.

I would suggest you keep your pc on and connected to the network for a couple of days to make sure you're the first one with that address for awhile.

Thanks for the help.. the weirdest thing is that it only happened on the Dis and not on any other site that I went too..
