Secretary Mel Martinez is the Republican nominee for the US Senate race here in Florida, with a decisive 14% point victory tonight!

He just got a congratulatory phone call from President Bush and he'll be flying to New York tomorrow, to be introduced in prime time at the Convention tomorrow night.

Hopefully, you'll be seeing the first Cuban-American U.S. Senator!

Martinez is a compelling American success story, having escaped communist Cuba after Castro's takeover, at the young age of 14. He lived with two foster families in Orlando and became a successful attorney and politician there. He was President Bush's first cabinet appointment as HUD Secretary, a post he held until January, when he resigned to run for the open Senate seat in Florida.

A wonderful email message from Mel this morning (sounds a lot like Arnold, doesn't it?)

Yesterday, the voters of Florida delivered an overwhelming victory for our campaign!

We couldn't have done it without your prayers, financial support and hard work.

As I said in my speech last evening, we live in the only nation on Earth where a 14 year-old boy escaping communism can arrive here alone, with nothing more than the clothes on his back and a small suitcase and one day serve in the Cabinet of the President of the United States.

Through the journey of my life, I have come to know firsthand the greatness of America and the genuine goodness of the American people.

This campaign is about the promise of America. The promise that regardless of where you came from, what language you speak, the color of your skin or your economic circumstance, if you share the American Dream of freedom and opportunity and pursue it with hard work, respect and an abiding faith in God, then all things are possible.

I'm running for the United States Senate to preserve and protect the American Dream for every American.

Gotta' confess though, I voted for Bill McCollum. Nothing against Mr. Martinez, I was just more familiar with the record of McCollum.

However, I GAURANTEE you, I will be voting for him against Betty Castor in the General election in November.

Great to hear that, Jim! And Bill McCollum is a great man who's earned my utmost respect. I certainly supported him in his 2000 Senate race.

But he had no chance of beating Betty Castor in a statewide race, and Martinez has a good shot at doing it.

And I'm hoping McCollum will end up with a position in the Bush Administration during the second term.

Wasn't Mel Martinez a trial lawyer for 25 years?

Don't Republicans consider trial lawyers one of the lowest lifeforms on earth responsible for everything from fewer doctors to dandruff?

Or is being a trial lawyer a bad thing only when that trial lawyer is John Edwards, a Democrat?

So what makes Republican sneer at one trial lawyer, John Edwards, but praise another trial lawyer, Mel Martinez?
