Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

To all of the princesses,GREAT JOB ON YOUR LONG RUNS!!!! You all are wonderful and WE GOT THIS!

I am super excited about the race. I wish my family was going with me to cheer me on and to have someone to celebrate with. But I guess celebrating with myself is fine, since this is for me!

I just did 13.1 today at a 12 min. 40 sec. pace. :-) So excited to have my last LONG run done! Got some funny looks at the gym since I was in costume too. :rotfl2:

I love the fact that you ran in costume at the gym!

I have a question about the hills. I believe there are two, right? How steep are they?

There is some roll to the terrain associated with overpasses/underpasses, tunnel by the Contemporary (the "underwater" section of the course, as the DJ says!). There is also what I would call at least one big hill, which is the off-ramp from World Drive to Epcot Center Drive at just before mile 10. That one is long, although not super steep. In my opinion, it's the road camber that causes extra difficulty beyond the grade. I try to stay on the edge where the road is flatter.

If the course is the same as the WDW half, there is then one hairpin turn (yuch) and the final overpass. By then, it's not the steepness, it's just the fact there's a bloody hill at 11+miles!

We're getting down to it, ladies! Are we getting excited?

After mile 4 just before the Contemporary Hotel there is the underpass for the waterway. There is usually a guy playing music up on the pass, but it is an uphill coming out of it. Just past mile 10 is the long sweeping on ramp with the army soldier guy yelling you got this or something like that and then a couple very little overpasses. Even as a runner it can be easier to walk if you aren't used to hills and makes for no recovery (being a bit short on breath) if you walk them.

Come to the meet on Sat. at DD near Earl of Sandwich.
People will cheer you, some may see you name on your bib and call you by name.

Don't worry, lots of us will be alone! I'm doing this for ME and the way I look at it, I won't be waking anybody else up at 2:30 in the morning!

So I'm sure some folks have seen this already, so forgive my multiple site bragging... I'm just really proud of how it came out, and I hope people will see me at the race, recognize me, and say hi, LoL! But here's my 97% of the way finished costume for the PHM (Princess Anna's coronation outfit):

I still have some little details to finish up, but nothing major. Really pumped about how it came out, so much so my son and I may have danced around the living room singing "For the First Time in Forever." LoL!

I'd love to see your outfit in person. I do quite a bit of sewing myself.

Part of me wishes I was going alone. The logistics of entertaining my family and dealing with the kids at a super crowded expo are making me antsy.

Looks fabulous!!

Is anyone planning on running with water/liquids?

For the first time, I tried running with a Fuel Belt - was so worried I would hate it because many of you have mentioned how annoying it can be if the water bottles are bouncing around or even riding up. Fortunately, I did not have this issue - my friend (who I borrowed it from) told me to wear it pretty high up so I think this minimized the bouncing/riding up. I know there are plenty of water stations, but I have not quite mastered the art of running-while-drinking-from-Dixie-cups. What is your hydration strategy?

Also, I love the idea of the Flip Belt - I run with my iPhone. But having both belts might be a bit much.

As always, apologies if any of this has been discussed previously - hard to find specific topics in this and the older thread. FWIW, while I didn't use all of the water I had on my for my 10 mile run, I do worry that I may need more water for the actual half since the weather is much warmer than what I've been training in and I like the idea of having water whenever I want rather than waiting for the next water station.

.

You can refill a bottle with water from the dixie cups at water stops. YOu can also slow down a bit and drink from the cups..helps a bit. I like to get my water from near the end of the line and pull over a bit and drink. I may bring my hand held if they continue to forecast such warm temps.

The watered down powerade will be first and the water will be second. The volunteers are good about calling out what they have..or just ask.

Love the Anna costume!!! Stunning!

As for water, when I run my training runs I carry a water bottle with me. Just a plain old toss in the recycle bin water bottle in my hands and I periodically switch which hand is carrying it. With DH deployed I've been pushing a jogger for my training runs, so the jogger's been holding my water for this training. Since I'm accustomed to taking a sip if my throat feels dry, I carry one with me in races, too. I hydrate at the stops, alternating between water and Powerade, and I take a sip as needed from my own water. I enjoy hearing the rhythmic sloshing, too. :confused3

Any suggestions for what time I should get to the expo on Thursday to get shoes? I took a half day off work in the morning so that I can be sure to get them. How early will people be lining up? I must be crazy.....

:yay::yay::yay: YES!

I have a question about the hills. I believe there are two, right? How steep are they?
Depends on where you're from, lol! I live in coastal FL... the biggest "hill" I can find is a bridge tall enough to allow tall ships to pass under. ;) I don't find the overpasses on the PHM course to be all that steep so much as long; more of a long steady upward climb. I actually like those - my calves get a nice stretch and it breaks up the monotony of flat highway. That one hill coming up from under the water bridge near the CR feels a little steep to me, but passes quickly.

By the way I know this is probably a no brainer but thought I would throw another idea out there for staying warm before the races. Awhile ago i got a Lot of 12 space blankets on eBay. They are all wrapped up in these tiny flat squares so they tuck into a waistband or pocket easy. The cost was $9, free shipping.
I got a similar deal on Amazon a couple years ago! I have 10 of the things, but haven't needed them yet... I keep using old sweaters I'd otherwise donate, and (knock on wood) it hasn't been too cold to need more yet.

What is your hydration strategy?
I need to sip regularly, so waiting for water tables doesn't work for me. My go-to is a small, 10oz handheld bottle that I refill from the tables as needed.

Congrats to all on getting those final long training runs done! I managed a mini-triple this weekend: 2.5 Fri, 5 Sat, 10 Sun and got it done with no issues. Yay! I will say that my Sun my head was NOT into it; my legs really weren't all that tired, but my brain was. It was major mental effort to turn out that final 10... but I was fine physically, so I know I'll be okay come PHM day, when the motivation of earning the GCS medals and Disney excitement kick in! :woohoo: That said, I'm pretty excited to taper now, lol!

Just an FYI....The "official where are you staying thread" is all updated! Over 100 people on there!

Did my last long run this weekend and got through my 10 miles with no IT band hip pain at all!! My legs felt just a little tight at the end but definitely didn't have that same hip pain I was having for a while. I wasn't even sore at all on Sunday the day after my run wooo! :cheer2: Now I'm getting really, really excited!

I just have to do a few short back to back runs this week and then it's time to go! the last back to back run I did was way back in November before the hip pain started. Since then stretching/rolling it out without overtraining has been my priority so I'm still a little worried about doing the GSC part, but I think at this point I need to be happy that I'm making serious healing progress and try not to over-do it even if I have to walk most of the 10k ::yes::

Good luck everyone on your last runs! We are almost there! pixiedust:

Add me for 5k with dd14 & ds10 will run the 1 mile, staying at ASMO

Training for my 1st half in May & following Jeff Galloway's training plan, so this will be a "30 minute maintenance run" for me. We planned the trip to WDW then found out about the race, offered it up to the kids & they were all over it (both are experienced racers), told them they have to get up at 4am while on vacay & run (after days of walking in the parks), they still wanted it so we are a go.

We will be at the breakfast, bought dd the pin and ds the Mickey ears (as a surprise). These and the medals should make for some nice mems.

Hi guys just an FYI. I won't take anyone's info from this thread about where you are staying. Sorry it's been a bunch of work (which I don't mind!) to just manage the one I started let alone pulling off another thread! So if you do want to he added to the list please go to the thread that says "official where are you staying" and I will happily get you added!

Thank you!!! Michele

Tropical Wilds, I love your costume. It inspired me to go and see Frozen with my daughter this afternoon. (She is 23 and she will be running the PHM with me) It was good.

When Elsa sang "Let it Go" I thought of the ladies on this board who mentioned that when they hear the song they do Elsa's ice making hand gesture. As she was singing I was imagining lots of women running with earphones and making that hand gesture. (I may spend too much time reading these boards, lol)
