Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

I have run all 5 PHM and never used headphone music. Just enjoy the course.

Congratulations on all 5!!!!!!! Super proud of you!!

I run with my headphones because first I hate to run :D second, I get bored lol. Are there enough people and entertainment around to keep your mind off of running?

Plenty of people! I would say there are a few places that are a bit "dead" but never very long. The first mile, but I am usually just getting a feel to see how I feel and and it is also dark. Perhaps just after the back stage area of MK, but soon there is much to take in. People with headphones tend to be unaware of others and with so many people I find it dangerous. I do use headphones on my training runs, but I am alone, and I only use one earphone (I just cut the other off) so I still have one ear open.

That stretch after the Poly before the ramp back to Epcot is awwwfully quiet, so I'd save music for that.

I imagine this has already been asked and answered, but what's everyone doing about music/headphones? My ipod battery ran out near the end of my last run, and those miles seemed extra long ;) Do you think there's enough entertainment on the course, or should I plan to put in at least one earplug?
As my mom always said "better to have them and not need them, then need them and not have them". I often will keep one ear bud in.

Thanks for the responses! I do want to make sure I experience everything, but I agree with kappyfamily. Think I'll have them with me, then just plug one ear in if I find I'm needing that extra energy :)

I tend to use my headphones on training runs for podcasts, anyway, so I'm used to running without music, but at this point I don't even bring them for a half marathon at Disney. Too much going on. Since I keep the volume pretty low, I've found that I have to pause my music multiple times per mile since there's music, DJs, bands, etc peppered throughout the course. I brought my iPod shuffle for the full marathon last month and kept it in a little baggie in my belt just in case, and I didn't pull it out at all.

Just finished 12! Yes! Long runs are done! Now I can actually get excited and start thinking about things like packing and the fact that I'm going on vacation in less than two weeks.

I just did 13.1 today at a 12 min. 40 sec. pace. :-) So excited to have my last LONG run done! Got some funny looks at the gym since I was in costume too. :rotfl2:

Congrats to all the fellow princesses completing long runs today! My two cents on the music issue . . . I have afterskokz headphones - they do not go in your ears! They sit right outside your ears and are super comfortable. So I can hear everything around me while I'm listening to music. For the DL 10K, I wore them but kept the music off until the last mile or so. When I needed a little extra push to run faster, I turned music on low. Again, I could still hear everything going on around me, but I had that little bit of music in the background.

Figment, just wanted to send out an extra :cheer2: for you! I know it's been hard with your injury, and you must feel great to get through your last long run. And thanks again for all the advice and encouragement you've provided on this thread!

7937-9592 in corral "K" so there will be 5 corrals behind you

Ok, I think that is good and gives us a cushion I understand.

Is there restroom access before the race to use?

Also, how are we to keep track of our pace if we all leave at different times?

Now that is brave! I cannot imagine running in costume at the gym. Bravo to you not just for the costume though- 13.1! You got this!

Oh gosh thanks! And thank you too joan! My favorite part of any Disney race is actually these wish boards. Love coming here during training and race weekends.

Re: music, I run with music. I sometimes turn it off at times, but I really enjoy actually running to my favorite songs and its one of my favorite parts of running. But I've always been aware and able to hear course instructions and other runners. I really appreciate the beat to keep me from going out to fast especially at the start.

Lots of portapotties with long lines. They are available, you just may have to wait. Another options is in the woods…there is always a few.

Not sure about your pace, but there are mile markers every mile with that record gun time. So if you start 30 minutes after the first start (gun time) then just subtract.

So we went today and picked up our superhero T-shirts for the 5K. I need to get one for DS12 and one for myself but I think I'm going to have to make them. No biggie since I usually make shirts for our trip.

I also was really excited because I really didn't want to wear a fuel belt and Athleta put new capris out with deep pockets. So got 2 pairs today. I don't think I'll need fuel for the 10K but now I can carry stuff for both races.
Now I just need to decide on shirts.

We're getting down to it, ladies! Are we getting excited?

I have a question about the hills. I believe there are two, right? How steep are they?

By the way I know this is probably a no brainer but thought I would throw another idea out there for staying warm before the races. Awhile ago i got a Lot of 12 space blankets on eBay. They are all wrapped up in these tiny flat squares so they tuck into a waistband or pocket easy. The cost was $9, free shipping.

I use these before a long race while I'm sitting or standing in the corrals. Just tie 2 ends around your neck like a cape then turn it around and sit on a curb. It will make a big bubble around you and is super warm. I take mine off about 15 minutes before the race and drape it over the fence. For roughly .90 cents each it's perfect and I don't feel guilty. You can also get them at REI or in any camping store. I like them better then the old trash bag trick.....

Also another idea for make shift arm warmers is buy a pair of knee length socks. I like the fuzzy kind, can usually buy them at target on clearance. Cut the toe part off and a little slit in the heel for your thumb to go thru. Cheap arm warmers you can toss after you warm up!

Hope this helps!
