Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

Hey there...can any vets school me on the PHM Expo?

We won't be in Orlando until Saturday AM...we're driving most of the way Friday afternoon/evening (stopping in Savannah) and then will get up bright and early to get into HOM.

I have a backup plan for packet pu in case of an unfortunate event causing us delays (one of my DSIL is a CM). However, I am wondering just how early do I want to prod DH to get back on the road Sat AM?

My gut is telling me this will probably be one of the coolest expos I'll ever get to. However, if that's not the case, and I can let DH sleep in a bit, that's what I'll do.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi Guys! I am running in my very first half marathon! So excited! :woohoo:

Even more exciting is that I am running with my mother n law and my 16 year old daughter! We will also have husbands and other kids with us making it a party of 9. We are staying at PORS.

Sooooooo What is your advice for our Saturday night meal?

We will be having a laid back MK day on Saturday so I was thinking Liberty Tree Tavern around 5:20 for dinner. Would that be a good pre race meal?

Then after the race..... should I book a brunch? big lunch? Big dinner somewhere or leave that open and see how we feel? I would totally do that if I wasn't planning the trip for 6 other non racers.

I am expecting we will be famished that day, but unsure since this will be my first half.

we are on the dining plan if that helps.... Thanks

As far as what to eat before, keep it how you normally eat before doing a long run. Usually I do chicken and rice or pasta. I don't eat a huge amount either. Lunch the day before the race is usually bigger then dinner. As far as after the race I usually plan a big meal and really go for it....you've earned it!

I missed the WDW expo last year (got there five minutes before closing), so I made sure to spend lots of time at the W&D one and it was great! The energy is just so amazing. And of course, if you like shopping at expos...I also took advantage of the The Stick booth and I know they have massage people there, too. I'd highly recommend going. It was worth it. I even dragged my DH along (he doesn't run) and he liked it. He even stuck around for one of the presentations I wanted to see and wasn't bored.

Can I have a pity party for a minute? I was doing so great....then shin splints in October. When I finally recovered from the shin splints (mostly)- it's been one miserable cold after another since thanksgiving! I'm on my third cold! How is that even possible?! :sad2: This one is probably the worst to date, and I've got serious chest congestion, a sinus headache and a lousy cough. I had a week around New Years where I was feeling fine and I got a couple runs in, but my time has slowed considerably since October...I'm just sitting here feeling sorry for myself with a cup of green tea and my heated blanket. I have no idea how long until I can get back to training. I'm running out of time!

Sorry I can't figure out the multi-quote for this board

I'd get to the Expo as early as you can (unless you want the Disney shoes not the first couple of hours though- last year it was a mess. I know it's in a better location this year though so we're heading around noonish I think, I hope that's early enough for "I did it shirts to still be there" and maybe some cool GSC stuff but after the first rush of shoe madness.)

As for what to eat after we always plan an "early dinner time" celebration meal. We'll have food in the room for right after the half (probably 10K too but it's a new thing so will play it by ear.) The girls usually sleep and I do laundry (stinky race laundry so it's easier to pack to go home) then we head to a park to walk around and get the kinks out before our dinner.

Sorry to hear....and whine away! "better out than in" my mom used to say (okay, she was talking about something else, but so what! :rotfl2:)

Letting yourself get better should be your near term "training plan" because you won't do yourself any favors if you try to train to your plan when your body can't handle it. And the time away is a positive thing for the shin splints. Just do what you can. If you can only run 1 mile, then try that. There are 6 weeks to the race. If you get better in the next 2,then you have a month to work on achieving a level of fitness to finish the race.

Adjust your race expectations--even elites wouldn't be shooting for a PR under the circumstances. Don't beat yourself up--you didn't ask for this.

Good luck!

Maura

So, I can't speak to the Disney World races but last year I was running behind (I missed the expo) for the Neverland 5k, so I called runDisney and they told me there would be a late bib pickup station available by the information booth in front of Disneyland.

Sure enough, I got there and there were a few people getting their bibs.

I'm not sure how it works at Disney World, but hopefully it's something similar. I'm planning on doing the Royal Family 5k but I won't be able to make the expo since I'll be driving in that night. I'll probably contact RunDisney to double check and I'll let y'all know what they say.

Here's the official answer on the Princess Half Marathon Page:

Packet Pick-Up
•Download and complete your personalized race waiver on-line (available approximately one month prior to event).
•Visit the Disneyworld® Health & Fitness Expo at Disneyworld® Hotel Exhibit Hall to pick up your Race Packet.
•If you're unable to attend Packet Pick-Up, someone may pick up your packet on your behalf. He/she MUST have their own Photo ID plus: •A copy of the participants Photo ID
•Packet Pick-Up Authorization Form
•Event waiver signed by the participant (available about one month before event)

No exceptions will be made.

I don't personally know anyone going, so I'll just keep my finger crossed that they just aren't advertising a late packet pickup!

I heard that at last year's WDW marathon weekend they had a 'secret' packet pickup, I believe the morning of the 5k. The writer of the TR said she went up and asked and the booth said they're mainly there for people who lose their bib but can give first-time pick ups too. Hopefully this is at PHM weekend, too!

Interesting! I've not looked at the Newport News airport, because it's almost three hours from my home! Do you rent a car at Orlando-Sanford? Very curious about this option :D

My parents live in Melbourne which is about 1 hour 15 mins from Orlando-Sanford so they usually come to pick us up at the airport and we go to Disney from there. Unfortunately there is no Magical Express or Disney transport from this airport but I do think there are other shuttles from the airport that go to the attractions pretty regularly so that might be an option as well. 3 hours away might be a bit too far to make it worth it for you to drive all the way to Newport News for a flight, but they also go though Charlottesville VA, Roanoke VA and Hagerstown MD if any of those are closer? Not sure about all the other destination cities, but chances are they are smaller airports where most people wouldn't usually think to look. They fly in to Tampa too, which is only an hour-ish away from Disney :)

This airline charges about $10 for a specific seat selection and carry on bags, but if you don't care about where you sit and if you bring a small duffel bag, backpack, or even both (I've never had them pay any attention to whether I paid for carry on bags or not shhh ;)), it tends to save a lot of money.

If it's convenient, it might be good airline to keep in mind for future trips too! :)

^^ ::yes:: Nothing new on race day... or the night before!

Ugh, I'm so sorry! I can deal with injuries so much better than illness, so I feel for ya. I think others have offered some good advice - first, get healthy, then see where you're at and adjust race expectations accordingly. Hang in there, and feel better!

I would try BWI too - it's only 1/2 hour from DC and way more convenient - you can also access it through amtrak/Marc train via new Carrollton.

Sadly, BWI is not convenient for me - I live in Loudoun County, so with no traffic, it's one hour door-to-door. Leaving on Thursday evening from the Tysons area would probably take me at least 1 1/2 hours. And it's still $400 on SW. :sad2:

Richmond - there's an idea I hadn't really considered. Flights are a little cheaper but the only non-stop return on Sunday is at 10:50 am - no way I could make that flight. I may not have even caught my breath by then! LOL

Don't panic...there's absolutely still time! Sorry to hear about your pet loss, that's so hard...but returning to "normal" this week is a boon! By my count, we're looking at just over 6 weeks, right? Is my math correct or has the cold affected my cognitive abilities (lol!)?
If you plan, no ifs ands or buts, and commit to your "long and slow" days the next 5 weekends...you could do 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 - whatever mileage works for you (I noticed in reading the older threads quite a few are in great shape training-wise going up to 10 and then doing the half) and be all set with time to spare for tapering back and getting that all important rest-up prior to the big day. Channel your inner postman ("neither rain, sleet, snow or dead of night shall deter me from my appointed task"...) and YOU WILL BE FINE! PROMISE!

Today is a day off for me...too darned cold to deal with outdoor training today, and the indoor track at my local rec center is a whopping .10 of a mile and I just can't bear to go around that itty bitty circle umpteen times today! So I think I will pop a walk aerobics dvd in tonight and get some really good stretching in.

Warmish FL is calling my name...here's hoping the weather breaks for us all soon!!!

Thanks for the support everyone. I promise not to panic just yet. I just need to get on the same page as DH. I'm not sure that we will even do the parks this time :sad1:. I'm still coming out of the holiday fog - I have zero motivation to plan much these days. ha!

Good catch! When I made our first thread it was before last year's Princess and we guesstimated the dates and races. I copy and pasted without double checking when I made this thread. I'll adjust the info when I get home!

It's going to be 48 on Sunday where I am! Yay! It will feel like spring after this week. Hope all are staying warm out there.

How much of a pain in the butt is it to stay offsite? I want to stay on property but I can stay cheaper offsite thanks to my husband's travel points. I will most likely be traveling alone.

Any help from anyone who has done this before?

can you use the points at Swan or Dolphin? If so, that would be easy.

No, I don't think so. He gets points through IHG because of his traveling with his job. There is a holiday inn where I can stay at pretty much for free the weekend I will be there. I may have a friend who can go with me now so I won't be alone.

My next question is, does anyone know if I can buy chEAR squad and race retreat now? I didn't want it before but if my friend comes I want her to be comfortable. :)
