Ignore your husband and son. If you are following a plan to get you to a 10k distance, and it is working for you and your goal, then you are fine. As a new runner you want to ramp up slowly, and ALL runners should cross-train. I think you are doing just fine.

I have run 3x/week ONLY ever since I started running 5 years ago. That's what my plan is based on. And I have had good results with it--from 5k all the way to the Boston Marathon.

The last thing you want to do is run too much and get injured or get bored/aggravated with it.

Stay the course!

Maura

I too would ignore them. I'm using Hal Higdon's plan for a marathon and he has 4 days a week running schedule.

Some people run a ton and it works for them. My brother runs 7+ miles every single day, no days off. He likes it better that way. Unless I had a big dog to take out every day that would not be what I choose to do.

You have to do what works for you, and starting slowly without overdoing it and injuring yourself is pretty important!

I have "mild persistent asthma" which basically means I don't really have attacks per se, especially when working out, but I do have a very hard time breathing around fumes, smoke, and freshly cut lawn. For me, it took getting a really good handle on my allergies to get my asthma under control. I still get shots every week and I'm on singulair, nasonex spray, and Allegra. I rarely have to use my inhaler anymore except in really humid or high pollen days. I run inside a lot, or at a school track with artificial turf.

It took a LONG time for them to figure it out for me too. It came on very strong when I moved back home after college (apparently my allergies were a mess from a new environment and it wasn't actually my mil stressing me out as I thought!) and I went thru many doctors before I found one that did all the testing and found out, yep, I do have it. Makes me feel better about why I always did miserable at the mile test in school! Now I keep my running pretty slow and that definitely helps too!

Thanks for the reply to you & Gryhndmom! I suppose looking into an inhaler I can use while running would be a good plan! Clearly training a good while before the race would be the optimal plan. Guess I'm most worried about not finishing the race in the allotted time! That makes me scurred!!

When am I NOT training?! ;) I've got a full race schedule of TOT 10-Miler, a Halloween Half, WDW Half, Glass Slipper Challenge and then a few spring 5Ks... lots of overlapping training plans. I'd guess each long race is about 12-16 weeks of training.

I have exercise-induced asthma, which, as its name implies, shows up when doing aerobic exercise. It's worst in dry, cold air, so I use an albuterol inhaler before each run in winter. I'm usually okay without it in warm humidity, excepting speed work.

Like Gryhndmom, run/walk intervals are key for me to go long distances. Those walk breaks are 100% for my lungs' benefit - makes a huge difference!

Oh I'm so glad!!!

I made my own, more or less - parts of Galloway's Time Improvement and DDD plans with a little Higdon and my non-running preferences. I basically do a 2-week set of strength train, short run, Pilates, short run, rest, long run, yoga, short run, strength train, short run, ballet, rest, speed or hill run, easy run+ yoga. I alternate speed work with hill work every 4 weeks and the long runs increase 1-1.5 miles every two weeks before tapering down 2-3 weeks out from race day.

Well, no offense, but I'm rather glad to see I'm not alone in this one! Lol...my Dr. did give me an albuterol inhaler too! Going to test that out & hope that will help. I do notice the run/walk intervals are better for me too.

How often do you run while training for a race? I am a new runner and am doing the Enchanted 10k. I plan to run my first 10k at the end of October to get a gauge on where I'm at and how much I need to improve to do the Princess Run.

Currently I'm following Jeff Galloway's program which includes a 30 minute run on Tuesdays and Thursdays (or walk/run in my case:rotfl:) and a longer run on Saturdays-- starting with 2 miles going up the the goal. My husband and son (natural athletes) don't think this is enough. They think I should be running at least 5 days a week.

Also, I do enjoy running but sometimes I need a break. I have been doing the P90X series and I love it. Do you think the P90X 60 minute lower body workout equals a 30 minute run? I'd like to through that in once and awhile when I just don't feel like going out or the weather is bad.

And thoughts/suggestions from experiences runners would be appreciated. :cheer2:

Yep, what everyone else said...I've only ever followed training plans of 3 running days per week with 2 cross train days. Definitely don't slack on the cross train...I learned the hard way how important that is and how much it really effected my running. Still paying for that... :(

Quick question (or a few rather)

1. Do guys run this as well? Ive never seen mention of men running it, or pics etc of men running it.

2. We just found out that we are going to be in the area for a wedding that weekend. We thought about signing up but its all sold out. So my question is there any charity registrations that I might be able to sign up under or is it just completely sold out at this point?

TIA for any info.

I don't know the answer to #2, but men definitely participate in the PHM! DH and I did it in 2010 with another couple. We saw men who actually dressed as princesses! One couple was Snow White (him) and, now I forget, who his wife/girlfriend dressed as but it wasn't a princess :)

That's awesome!! Not sure I would dress up, maybe as a prince? That would be fun.

Im going to search online and see if I can find any entries. Is there a chance that they will open more if people cancel etc?

I know you've already gotten loads of support but I wanted to contribute mine, as well. You are doing perfectly. You chose a training plan that has benefitted thousands and you are following it. I'm not sure why your DH and DS think they need to critique it but I think a three day training plan is an excellent choice for a beginner and you are starting with plenty of time pre-races to prepare. Also, don't feel like you have to focus on lower body only on cross-training or missed run days. Your core and upper body also contribute to running fitness and, especially core training, will benefit you immensely. Finally, I am also not a fan of hitting the pavement when the weather isn't great but, with the right gear, I've come to enjoy an extra chilly or drizzly morning and even found some satisfaction in powering through the heat/humidity as long as it isn't midday. So, don't write off your training if weather isn't ideal. You may experiment and find that you love running in the rain or that brisk temps are invigorating. And it is good practice for race day which can bring any weather. Enjoy your training!!

Does anyone know if its possible to transfer registration for the race? I won't be able to go now and I know someone who wants to. Anyone know if this is possible?

No - Disney does not allow transfers. Was hoping for one for a friend but no way to do it.

I am a Denise Austin DVD fan..I have power yoga, pilates, hit the spot core conditioning and a few other.

And YES!! to stretching:
I have a Kathe Smith Stretch video

It is possible to get in through either charities or travel companies. Look under "Registration" for more info.

And as for regular entries opening back up--that doesn't happen.

Good luck. I know someone who was able to get in two weeks ago through a travel company, so you never know what may still be available.

I'm signed up so there will be at least 1 guy in the thousands of women!

Curious -- what do you do to cross train?

I attend a small 'boot camp' class once a week and when I'm taking things seriously the other day I either do a video at home, take a class at the gym, do some strength training at the gym or take a boxing class...still trying to get back in the groove of consistently working that second day in though.

Oh awesome, thank you for the info. Ill check it out. I would love to do this since we are going to be in the area anyways that weekend.

That's awesome! Ive heard some guys dress up too, are you planning on wearing anything special for the race?

To everyone else - I teach Pilates, Yoga and Spin and will be putting together a Pilates for Athletes workshop soon, including a video that shows some exercises and stretches to do. When I get it finished Ill post a link here if anyone is interested. Probably in the next week or so.

Help!! My ADR day is tomorrow and now at the last minute I'm making changes like an idiot.

We had planned a Chef Mickey breakfast on Friday morning, then to run the 10K and kids races Saturday, then 1/2 on Sunday. But my family wants to go to Kennedy Space Centre on Saturday now, so I moved the kids races to Friday.

If I book a Chef Mickey ADR on Friday at 11:30am, will we make it? The kids races start 8:45am at EPCOT and we're only doing the 200m and 400m. OR would we be better off with an 8am breakfast once I finish the 10K on Saturday? And would I have enough time after finishing the race to make an 8am breakfast time? It won't take me more than an hour, and I should be in the first corral, but with Disney buses you never know...

Any tips to making dining reservations for this event? I plan on making them, but any advice is welcomed! I heard online opens at 6am EST..?? Thank you! :)
