Thought I'd post for some ideas! I'll lay out what we're looking for, what we've done in the past, what we like, and I'd like to see how you would arrange this.
First a little history. We went to WDW in 2010, 2012, 2014, and will be going back in late 2015, possibly early December. This puts our trips a little under 2 years apart. Have never been to WDW at Christmas time, tho have been to DL around then.
We would like to do 11 nights. We can arrive any day, tho we will most likely get there around midday, driving from Chicago the night before. After the 11th night, we will just check out and start the drive home. (no day-after park for us). This gives us about 11 days counting the arrival day, which is really more like 10-1/2 days.
We have never been to Universal Orlando. On this 4th trip we would like to mix in Universal. I have been to Universal Hollywood before, probly 15 years ago. At Uni we want to enjoy all of the Harry Potter stuff, plus the little kid things like Despicable me and Transformers. We'll probly split up to do some roller coasters too. I am a total newbie when it comes to planning the Uni part of it.
Must-do's:
At WDW... 2 MK, 2 EC, 1 AK, 1 HS.
At Universal... 1 IOA, 1 USF
At Legoland... 1 LLFL
An evening at DTD
An evening to visit local family
So right there you have yourself 9 park days, out of a 10.5-day trip which leaves bits and pieces free for misc stuff.
Our party is 2A 4C (see sig)... so frequent checking in and out of hotels is a lot of work. We toyed with doing a triple-split... RP, Swan, CR... but that's in and out a lot, packing up and moving.
We have never stayed at an Epcot resort... Definitely an option, especially considering 3 out of our 6 Disney days are at Epcot parks. Poly is our fav. CR is a strong second. We could stay at the Swan for free, which if you do 2 nights there, is a big savings. Also of interest is the new Legoland Hotel opening up next year. We are huge LEGO fans and our trip to WDW would not be complete w/o the pilgrimage down to Winter Haven.
Altho we are 6, there are other parties involved (could be various combinations of a party of 2, a family of 4, and a family of 3) so we have options regarding booking various kids w various parties to squeeze into 5-person standard rooms. Or we could jump up to suites to try to fit more ppl in less rooms but those tend to be expensive... but certainly evaluating all options.
What we don't want...
* To stay offsite, rent a home, or a condo. Just not us. We want to be in the Disney / Universal Bubbles. I've toyed w the idea of renting points, but that probly wont work out for the flexibility in planning for such a big group is going to be cut back severely by locking in DVC rooms.
* Grand Floridian - just never appealed to us.
* DDP. This trip we'll not be using the DDP, since we did most of the good-DDP-value restaurants on our last trip.
* MVMCP? I dunno. Paying for special events like this is costly when you have a big family, and we'll be at the parks tons already. Would you budget this in?
So what would you do? Blank slate here!

. also I like to plan so it would make it much easier to plan around one location rather than several.
