MY son is doing a state report on New Mexico-we thought it would be great to get some personal touches on the state.

Could you please send a postcard(scenery or historical sight please). Also please write your favorite thing about being in New Mexico(my DS is in 2nd grade, so please write it in simple terms-so he can read them to the class). Thank you so much. Terri :sunny:

I don't live in New Mexico anymore so I can't send a postcard but one of my favorite things about NM is that the state question is "Red or green?" It refers to chile and is a common question when you order practically anything in a restaurant. The correct answer is green. :teeth: Although my dd would tell you it's red. I don't know what happened--I tried to raise her right. :rotfl2:

I think it's great that your son is doing a report on New Mexico--so many people think that it's not a state.

I beg to differ (politely of course). The correct answer is "Christmas" (both red and green, get it?). Another fun fact about NM -- the state bird is the Road Runner (which looks nothing like the bird from the cartoons). And Road Runners can't fly. Go figure.

Jeepers, I can't go out and get a postcard! The weather is fantastic. Trinity Site is where the first atomic bomb was tested/exploded. The food is one of the most awesome things! When we go on vacation, the first thing we do when we get home is have some mexican food. This past weekend was the 300th birthday of the city of Albuquerque. I hope he does well!

Thanks for the cool information-It is really intresting to see what people are posting vs. his books on NM.
Bumping again incase some other NM Dis'ers are out there :wizard:

I remembered a neat website about NM for kids: http://www.governor.state.nm.us/kidscorner.php?mm=8

When dd was in elementary school, they started each day with this: "I salute the flag of the state of New Mexico and the Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures." We lived in the Four Corners and we were very near the Navajo reservation. DD had friends whose grandparents lived in hogans.

A big favorite at fairs was Navajo fry bread and Navajo tacos--which are taco ingredients on fry bread. Very yummy.

The Four Corners area has four distinct seasons including winter. Since it's at a high elevation, we did get snow in the winter but it would usually melt by 10:00 a.m. It wasn't until we moved to Michigan that dd actually experienced a snow DAY. It was usually a snow "delay" in NM which meant they had to go to school around 10.

At Christmas time, the college where I worked would put on a luminaria display. These are paper bags with sand on the bottom and candles put in the sand. 50,000 of them are set out and entire community gets involved. Preschool children would fill the bags with sand and add the candles and volunteers would set out the bags and light the candles. Hot chocolate would be provided by the Red Cross and carols would play across campus and the entire town would show up to walk through the display.

Hope some of this helps your son out with his project. New Mexico is a wonderful place to live--I miss it a lot.

Thanks for the info-I am going to make the cookies with my son- and we are going to use the ZAI symbol and the Flag as the Diorama (I was also thinking about making cave dwelling site with him)
