My wife has a roll top desk and when we moved, something fell on top of it knocking the top out of the track. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. It is fully enclosed and we can not get it open to try to pop it back in place from the inside. It would have to be repaired temporarily from the outside until we can slide the top open. Any help would be much appreciated. Any thoughts???? Thank you

Oooh, this sounds right up my alley. Anyway you can post a pic?

I would try and take the top piece off then a side to reset the tambour (the rolling part) inside the track. Or maybe you can take off the back to get to the inside to unscrew one of the sides.

Perhaps there are screws on the outside that are covered with a small wooden plug or something? If there is, you can pop it out with the edge of a blade to get to the screw. Without seeing the furniture, that's what I would think of doing.

Make sure you have some wood glue handy and some wood putty for putting it back together.

Good luck!

Right now we have the desk in storage but it is near the front. We need to get my wife's SS card out of it but of course can not get the top open. I was hoping there might be an easier way to force the top back into the track but I guess taking some components apart is the only chance. We have had this for 35 years so we do not want to destroy it getting the lid open. Thank you again for your help, I will try to post pictures when we can get at it.

If you have all the supporting documents (birth certificate, marriage cert, etc.) not in the desk, you can get a new SS card pretty quickly. DH had to get a replacement. He had all his supporting documents went to the SS office and got a new card in the mail within 2 to 3 days- they told him 10 weeks or something ridiculous like that.
