I am so tempted to move from FL to the Newport News area. Just loved it! I have a few papers here and want to check some online for jobs. Are you happy living in the Hampton Roads area? Have you been there quite a while? Any info/opinions would help! Thanks!!

Oh, I'm scheduled to start back with classes on January 6, and they'll end on May 6. But I don't want to be here that long! Four more months in FL?! Decisions, decisions!

Hi Pin Wizard, ChiChiHoney is my DD. I thought I would elaborate a little more on her answer.

We have lived in Poquoson, VA for over 6 years. The town is located next to Newport News, on the other side of the Peninsula. We've loved it here, much nicer than Northern VA, where we lived for 18 yrs. My DH drives for 10 min to work, (vs 45-60 min in No. Va), every place I like to shop is no more than 15 min from my house, usually less.

Great movie theaters (Hampton 24, love that place!), 20 min from Busch Gardens, Water Country, and Williamsburg. I can go to Buckroe Beach in Hampton in 20 minutes (it is on Chesapeake Bay) or I can get to Va Beach in 30min. My fav beach is Sandbridge, about 45 min away from home. It's less crowded, more family oriented.

Anyway, if you need more info, just ask.

Oh yeah, forgot to add-----our home was flooded during Isabel, but not to worry. Newport News didn't get flooded. I think Poquoson is at or below sea level, so we are a little more vulnerable to tidal surge. Hurricanes are very rare here, but they do happen.

Also, things are definately laid back here. If you like "hurry up", No. Virginia would be better. Personally, the older I get, the more I like things to move slow.;)

Thanks, Linda and Chichi! :) I remember going just into that town and thinking...how is this pronounced? LOL! ;) I went to turn around and went down a beautiful side street! I even wrote down the name of it but forget what it was now. A female name. But off that street was Zachary! I remembered that because DS has a friend with that name. :teeth: Thanks for the info!!! It really is such a beautiful area. Slow?! That's for me! Life is way too hectic and stressful, never mind adding in the crazy pace of Northern VA!!!

LOL! Don't worry, Lauri! I'll drive across and visit you. We can go shopping!! :teeth:

Richmond is really beautiful. We went to a brunch at the Jefferson Hotel, downtown. OMG, it was incredible! Elegant surroundings and food to die for!

Sounds like a great place for me to visit! :teeth:

DD lives in Newport News. She went to college in Williamsburg, Medical School in Richmond and now doing her residency in Newport News. I've loved visiting her in each place she lived. I hope to eventually move down to Williamsburg.

Sounds great, Karen! Crossing my fingers to get there myself.

Karen! Hi! Your daughter is Dr.? Very, very cool! You must be so proud. We might retire to Williamsburg, too. Haven't started looking yet, dh has a few more years to go.

Happy New Year ya'll!;)

Retire to Williamsburg? Now there's a thought I've never had. Sounds GREAT!!

I used to live in Newport News, but moved a few miles over to York County for the better schools. I like this area. Moved here because of the Navy back in 1991. Close to just about everything. I like the idea that Busch Gardens is only 15 minutes away :teeth: Sure, it is not WDW, but it is better than nothing.

Busch Gardens is 45 minutes from my door. It is a great place!

And the Jefferson is very swanky. it is lovely. i've got some clients who work there.

The Jefferson...is that a hotel or does it have a hotel? I saw this gorgeous place online and thought...now THAT'S where I want to stay!! :)

York County...Yorktown is there I suppose. Passed it enough while I was there, but I didn't stop. Busch Gardens? I've never been there. And there's one on the other side of FL, isn't there? I'm on the eastern side. LOL! I can see myself spending all my time at Williamsburg and staring at the military guys in the area. Had 2 stay at my hotel. Ran into one guy in the elevator and at breakfast each morning. ;)

Just had to chime in here I'm ususally just on the scraping boards. But I was born in Va Beach (yes my dad was in the Navy) Grew up mostly in No.Va. and now by marriage I'm stuck in Maryland just over the river. (I usually don't admit that)

Va Beach is like heaven on earth! Just that whole area Newport News, Cheaspeak, Portsmouth is amazing. My brother moved back after college and every chance I get I go. It is so relaxing and you feel so safe and american being surrounded by all the bases. I love the hustle and bustle of the beltway but hubby and I have already decide we will retire in Va Beach. (30 years from now). Plus the cost of living is sooooo much cheaper down there.

Right now the trend around here is to retire in Williamsburg. Especially with all my dads Navy friends. Grandparents love being near theme parks!

If you do have kids, you do want to look in the different County school systems. There is a huge differences between them.

The Jefferson is beautiful. DD and I enjoyed Sunday Tea there one afternoon when she lived in Richmond. I thought the sraircase in Gone with the Wind was modeled after the one in the Jefferson.

That's the place! And thank you for the other links.
