Calling all EA experts - multiple reservations?

We are EA members and normally reserve the type of vehicle we want (aka Emerald Reserve Service) as we don't want to risk there not being a minivan available when we get there.

But I was wondering if it is possible to make 2 reservations for the same time period - one as an intermediate and one for the specific type (minivan). When we get to the airport, if there are minivans on the EA, we take it and use our intermediate reservation, and if not we goto the desk and use our minivan reservation to get the vehicle we want.

Does this make any sense and if so will it work?

With Emerald Club reservations, either Emerald Reserve or Emerald Aisle, they have your CC on file and will charge your CC for a no show, if you do not cancel. I wouldn't risk it.

Book what you absolutely need. That's my moto.

What if I cancel the unused reservation when I get there and find out which will work? I should be able to access the web site from my Blackberry.

The savings between the midsize and minivan are about $200 right now.

National requires a "guaranteed reservation" on specialty vehicles which include mini-vans. There is a $50 charge if you cancel with less then 24 hours notice. Previous poster is correct, National has your credit card information so I'd expect to be charged.

I didn't even think the EA has many min-vans that often.

I guess you could make a backup min-van reservation with a different agency. I suggest you just shop for the best rates on a min-van and not complicate things.

Guaranteed Reservations are required on all specialty vehicles, such as minivan, 4-wheel drive, and convertible car classes at all Corporate locations and at participating licensee locations.

Here is what their website says:

No Show

When a customer books a Guaranteed Reservation and does not rent their car, a No-Show fee may apply.

If the guaranteed reservation is canceled at least 24 hours prior to the anticipated arrival time there will be no fee charged.

If the guaranteed reservation is canceled less than 24 hours in advance, or you fail to pick up the car, a no show fee of $50.00 (includes applicable taxes, surcharges, and lessor fees) is charged to the credit card on the reservation.

If you must have a minivan, just book it on Emerald Reserve and save yourself a lot of hassle (and possibly a no-show charge that eats up all the savings you were hoping for).
