Calling all Chicago DISers #3

Morning!

We're under the two week window now. Well two week from departure, not two week from arrival. We're driving for the first time. :scared1: Any tips seasoned Chicago to Disney drivers? DH just came home from bringing in the van for a check-up.

My sister is doing fairly well. She's in pain, but she had surgery so what do you expect? She had some disc thing in her neck so they went in from the front and moved her voicebox to get to it. She was hoarse but sounds much better today. She came home last night.

I have to share some shirts an online friend made for me. They are in my PTR, but I want to show them off here too. Aren't they cute? The baby's says "Celebrating My Kidneys"

IMG_0343.jpg

Oh geez, I just tried to go back to read and the Dis is down. DH says it was scheduled to. I need to keep up on things more. Maybe they'll fix the speed issues.

slo- Sorry you're still feeling sick. Yay for the good night though! That helps when you're sick. Megan (the baby) has a cold and I always get so worried when she's sick. Now add on the h1n1 scare...

paint- glad you're sister is home too. It is always much better once you can sleep in your own bed.

Geffric- Enjoy your weekend! I loved going back to school with clean, folded laundry!

Erika.. we drive down every year.. any specific q's?? or just general stuff.. drive is NOT bad..

We're driving for the first time. :scared1: Any tips seasoned Chicago to Disney drivers?

Driven it many times. It's a long drive, but it goes by quickly. I'm in the SW burbs, so I take I-55 south to 113. 113 south until it turns into Wall St and just keep going until it Tee's off at Water St. Left on Water and it runs you right onto US-45, then 45 south to I-57. That way I avoid all that south side traffic around 80 & 57. Then I stay on I-57 until I-24, just north of Carbondale and I-24 all the way across to I-75 in Chattanooga. In Ocala, FL, I get off I-75 onto the Florida Turnpike south and then I get off on US-27 south to 192 East and come in the side road next to the Animal Kingdom. It's about 1,200 miles. I've done it straight through, but it's a killer. Depending on the time of day I leave, I either stop around Manchester, TN, and spend the night around the half way mark, or I try and get south of Macon, GA. Atlanta traffic can be awful if you hit it in rush hour, so I try to plan around when I'm going to hit Atlanta.

Erika- We always drove, too. I don't know how my parents didn't kill us! That was in the days before seatbelts and stuff, so I just laid on the couch of the van and read. We snacked, played, walked around the van or slept on the floor :scared1:... Yep...it's a wonder we are still alive. We always stopped in GA or TN for the night- only drove straight through a few times. I drove once with my kids, but I prefer to fly! I am spoiled.

Hi all-

I haven't been here in a long while and haven't been on the Disboards as much as I used to.

Hope everyone is doing well!

My life has been a little different since my kids go to jr. high(both in 7th grade). Kids start an hour earlier than the elementary schools here. THey get out about an hour earlier, too (which I don't like as much).
Homework is assigned on the weekends as well as during the week. My kids were not used to having homework assigned on the weekends til now.

My son is enjoying band and boy scouts still! My daughter unfortunately isn't involved in much afterschool stuff. She doesn't have much interest but hopefully someday.

Already looking into which high school my kids may attend in less than a couple of yrs from now. Casually looking into the band program at the high school my son may attend. Found out the high school band goes to WDW every 3 to 4 yrs, so if my son goes to the certain hs, he will be able to go to WDW! :cool1:

Just dropping in to say hi!

Rosemarie

Thanks for the driving tips! My dh (middlepat here) was very excited about yours Crissup, so thank you very much. I'm packing a bunch of Disney movies and a few surprises (Snow White - hopefully won't be too scary and Tinkerbell) for the girls.

paint- we did that too when we drove down with my parents. I don't remember the drive, but my mom says we were all over the place- no seatbelt.

I came upstairs to print out some transfers, but it looks like I used all the color ink on the autograph books. Back to staples...

geffric- I was just wondering which way most people from here go. We're thinking of 57 for the way down and 65 coming back. We're leaving at noon on Friday and starting the drive home sometime on the next Saturday morning.

Erika - we took 57 way this summer since 65 was underconstruction.. but they are done.. we like 65 way since there is cheap gas past Merrillville and near the airport in Indy.. we go around Indy using 465

so one way is 65 to 24 in NaSHVILLE, then 24 to Chattanooga and then onto 75 to the FL Turnpike.. we get off like Crissup

this summer we went 57 to 24 to 75...

we go around Atlanta not through it.. but you can do either.. ( depends on traffic)

When the kids were little, I went online to McD's and they will map out the route and tell you where the playlands are.. we stopped, took a bathroom break, let the kids play and then took off.. another thing I used to do was that i made the kids do races at the rest stops.

Hey everyone. The first quarter of school just ended so last week was crazy, just like the last. I found out during the week that I got accepted to Central Michigan University with two scholarships. And now I'm starting art school decisions. I'm really into photography and want to continue my education in it; however, my parents aren't too on-board with my decision to go to art school. Today was National Portfolio Day in Milwaukee, a day where a bunch of different art schools from around the nation are in one place to review your portfolio. It was an awesome experience. I got great feedback from the 6 schools I saw, 4 of which I've decided to apply too. Hope everyone is good, life here is crazy as always with school, work, interning, and volunteering. I've got 3 days "off" school next week in a row, 2 field trips and one day off to take my senior photos with the photographer I intern for =) I'm really excited for this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EVERYONE THAT HAS HAD A BIRTHDAY!!! heheh a lot of birthday all at once here.

slo. hope your feeling better soon!
paintnolish. glad everything went well with your sister! I hope she continues to recover well and as quickly as possible.

princess.chell This school year is going fast. Alex just finished the first quarter. Just an observation of a few years on this planet. Keep your options open and try not to specialize too much. You can always minor in Art there are many things you can do with that.

I thought we were done with the rain? I woke to wet ground :confused3 At this rate I won't be able to use my leaf mulcher till december.:rolleyes1

Paint So glad your sister is out of the hospital. Part of the reason they spring her seemingly so early it because they don't want her to get any hospital germs. That is where my cousin got MRSA.

Erika WOW your trip is coming up fast. I bet the kids are excited I know I would be. We would drive down in a heartbeat but, since I am the only driver I am not comfortable. Maybe once Alex get his license.
Sorry I missed that your sister was having surgery. I am glad she is doing well.

Off to finish laundry and then later to run some errands I didn't get to yesterday. It never ends does it?:laundy:

Good Sunday morning to all!

Happy Birthday to all who had birthdays in October :cake::bday:

Hope you feel better, Sandy.

What a beautiful fall day yesterday!!!!!:)
I took total advantage of it, and was outside all day.
I got all my plants cut down, all the summer decorations put away, and all the pool furniture covered up.
Now the yard is officially ready for winter :cold: :guilty:
Now I'm counting the days until Spring :flower:

Thanks everyone for the well wishes, and I'm still not feeling 100% :guilty:
The last time I felt like this, my doctor started me on Zyrtec, and put me on an inhaler. I went and bought some Zyrtec yesterday, and we'll see if that helps, if not, then I'll need to go to the doctor.

HERSEY - Enjoy the new vaccuum:)
It's always fun to use something new, even if it is just a vaccuum.:)

paint - I"m glad your sister is recovering nicely :) I will continue to keep her in my prayers!!!

geffric - Good idea about the liability waiver :thumbsup2

erika - I"m sorry to hear of the baby not feeling well :guilty: I hope she feels better soon:wizard:
**The shirts are cute, but I don't understand the baby's shirt :blush:

Crissup - I agree about that Atlanta traffic. We drove in 2001 and we hit it at rush hour, and it was a nightmare - we sat in that traffic FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

Rose - Good to see you are all doing well :)

chell - Congrats on the acceptance and scholarships!!!! :cheer2:

Tiggggggggggggggggggggggern - Welcome home!!!! I"m glad you had a good vacation :cool1:

Mac - thanks for the listings!!!:)

It is officially time for me to go get Katie up for school :teacher:
Have a great day everyone!!!

Oh, she had kidney failure last December 18th at 15 moths old- the day before we were supposed to leave for Canada to celebrate Christmas with my dh's family. She was released for the first time on Christmas Eve at 6pm, but then ended up back at Children's for almost 3 weeks in January and then for a few more shorter times after that. We decided that if/when she got better, we would be going back to WDW. Ironically since this is the year of celebrations which we really didn't know at the time, we are celebrating her kidneys- since they are working with meds, for now.

I hope the zyrtec helps!

Morning guys! Phew, just caught up. Haven't had time for much DISing lately. All is going pretty well here. DH has spent a lot of time with his mom since last weekend. Got the kids all caught up with the missed school work. Unfortunately DS is home today with a 101.5 temp, sore throat and nasty cough so he's missing more school.

DD12 has volleyball try-outs today. Everyone makes the team but they divide them into an A team and B team. She loves to play and doesn't really care too much which team she's on.

Today was also PT conference sign-up for both DDs. Grrr, why does it never work out that I can get them both scheduled around the same time. :headache: DD8s teacher already notified us she wouldn't be there one of the days, unfortunately the only day she'll be there she is not offering any evening hours (she also didn't have enough slots for the number of students she has :confused3). I can go on my own but I much prefer when DH and I can go together. DD12s is a different day at 7p so that works OK.

:cake: Happy Birthday to everyone that had October birthdays!! Hope they were great!

erika - wow, your trip is coming up quick! We always drove as kids but haven't yet with our own kids although we'll probably have to at some point. The shirts are too cute! I love Disneywear! :lovestruc
*What a scary thing you went through with DD, I'm glad she's doing OK now and hope it continues!
**Glad your DSis is doing OK after surgery.

slo - glad you're feeling a bit better. That new pseudonephrine (sp?) substitute doesn't work for us around here either.

mac - thanks for the listings!

Tiggerrn - Welcome Back!! Glad you had warm weather, did you happen to bring any back with you? ;) Looking forward to hearing all about it!

rose - good to see you around again. We are facing the HS decision soon too since DD is 7th grade. Our problem is our subdivision is not the same school district as the rest of the town so she'd have to go to a different HS if she's goes to public school. Problem with private is $$, can't believe how expensive they are!

MJ - congrats on the college acceptance and best of luck on the art schools!

paint - wow, I can't believe your DSis is going home already! Glad she's doing good.

:wave2: to everyone else!

Wish this gray rainy weather would go away - I need the SUN! Sheesh! Well, I guess I'll just put on some fun music and clean. Have a great day everyone! :flower3:

Hey everyone. Hope everything is going well. I've got two field trips this week, one tomorrow to the city for art and one Thursday to the "woods" (aka my teacher isn't tell us where) for AP Environmental Science. Plus I've got my senior photos with the photographer I intern for on Wednesday. I'm really excited and nervous about it. Anyway, I'm off to bed early tonight since I haven't been feeling well lately, early as in 10pm! =)

HERSEY I totally meant I just finished first quarter, not semester. I wish it the end of first semester... My mom is telling me the same thing about going to art school. I'm not sure what I'm doing still haha.
How old is Alex?

erika412 Those shirts are so cute! Have a great trip!!!!

Thanks for all the congrats; I feel a lot better about college, but at the same time I'm more stressed about deciding what I want to do.

Crissup - I agree about that Atlanta traffic. We drove in 2001 and we hit it at rush hour, and it was a nightmare - we sat in that traffic FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

I remember watching a documentary on Atlanta's traffic problem years ago. It was listed as the worst traffic problem in America by the govt. Here in Chicago, we think we know pretty bad traffic. In NYC, I've seen pretty bad traffic. Wash DC had pretty bad traffic. Consider that none of them are as bad as Atlanta.

I swear I see the problem when I drive through there. It's about 8 lanes wide in each direction and if a guy in the far left lane thinks he sees an opening in the far right lane, he goes for it, across all 8 lanes of traffic, no matter how congested it is! :scared1:

I swear, I think they put more miles on their cars driving side to side than they do driving forward. :lmao:

John My dad traveled for business with a job he had and he hated Atlanta drivers. He also said St louis was bad too.

princess.chell I know you meant first quarter ;) It still is moving fast. Alex is 15 and a freshman. Bring wadders for the woods. It should be very muddy. Going around the city should be fun.

ID That is insane that the teacher doesn't accomadate working parents. I understand they need their time off but this is one or two time a year for thes meetings.

WOW it is time for me to jump in the shower all ready. Alex has an explore test today he should have fun. :rolleyes1

No Leads Group for me this morning - Kevin has something going on, so I have to be home to get the girls off to school:teacher:.

Nothing to new going on here - same ol, same ol!!!

Thanks for the continued well wishes :goodvibes

erika - How scary about your little baby having kidney failure :guilty: I will keep her in my prayers to have God hold her tight, and to keep the meds working right.

ID - I hope your son feels better soon :wizard:
**I can never make PT conferences, so I always ask the teacher to call me, and they always do :thumbsup2

chell - You got a busy week ahead of you. I'll send some PD to feel better soon:wizard:

Crissup - That's interesting - I'll have to share that with Kevin, because he is still talking about that traffic

Kim - :wave2:

HERSEY - I took my shower last night, so all I have to do it wet my hair this morning :thumbsup2

Well, it's time to get rockin and a rollin.:dance3:
have a good day!!!!
