Does it bother you when people call you by your last name? I was just wondering because at work there are some people that call others by last name. These same people call others by their first name. Just a little confused.

Nope not at all. I've been called by my last name since I was 11 or 12, and that's still the case today (even though I recently got married and that is not my last name anymore haha)

I used to be very common in the military.

I don't know if it is still as common.

In fact, there are people I talk to today and I still use just their last name.

1 co-worker calls me my my last night. Most don't, I suspect because I have an uncommon, and short first name.

I worked at a place where last name only was fairly common. I kinda liked it, but there were a few who didn't.

Rylee, (my SN) is my last name, or I should say, was my last name, different spelling though. When I married, I took my husband's equally Irish last name. :)

There is a P.E. teacher at school that calls all the kids by their last name.

Not me, but my kids are called by our last name. It's unusual for our area and a fun, unique name. Even dd12 is called by our last name from middle school on through high school. Some teachers and many students call them by our last name. I cheer for them by yelling their last name when they are on the soccer field.

When your name is Mike, Dave, Steve, Dan.... you tend to get called by your last name because there's usually 7 or 8 of you using that first name.

Yeah, I worked in an office where the boss was Mike, number 2 guy was Michael, number 3 was Mike. And 3 of the staff were Mike.

Funny thing is, the guy who was Michael HATED being called by his last name,, and you better not call him Mike.

Add Sarah to the list of common names. I was always taught to call adults by their last names out of respect. When I am teaching my students call me by my last name but I know in the south sometimes it is Ms. Karen etc....

At my old job I was always called by my last name once I got married, it never bothered me. I've also called my husband by our last name since the day we met and most people at his work call him by it as well. I think we just have one of those last names.

I found it interesting because I heard a coworker and our boss talking about this. The coworker thought it disrespectful calling someone by their last name without a Mr. Mrs. Miss Ms. etc... in front of their last name.

One of my students at my old school shortened my last name and it stuck with my friends on staff. So I was called a shortened version of my last name. I didn't mind at all. :) But when I moved schools, I lost my name.

Most of my career I was called just by my last name by coworkers. It doesn't bother me a bit.

I didn't mind it in basic training, but once I got to my regular base, I said "No...you can call me <rank> <last name> or <first name>, but not just last name". No one had an issue with that.

Hmmmm, interesting that the same person will call some by their last name and some by their first. Perhaps they like the last name better or it's easier for them to remember?

This thread reminded me of one of the first letters I got from Navy boot camp from my son. He said, "My name is no longer Jacob, it's now (last name). I wonder if I will even remember my first name by the time boot camp is over?" :lmao:

My husband's family has a first name as a last name and it happens all the time--because it is tricky to remember which one. Even long time friends make the mistake. And on rare occasion it happens to me which is totally weird as usually it happens to the male members of the family.

So to us--we just assume it is in error. We never correct anyone. But be she SOF this, we wouldn't necessarily know that they are intentionally calling by the last name. But it always makes us giggle.
