California Grill Opinions?

I can make a meal on appys & sushi alone. The filet is always good. DS16 always orders the seasonal protein & has yet to be disappointed (ostrich, bison, lamb, etc.).

Highly recommend the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli & the Spicy Kazan Roll. Flatbreads are always good as well.

I love love love the spicy kazan even tho it made my eyes water and nose run..lol

Trying the filet for the first time in Sept and cannot wait!

Now I am craving sushi..:)

Been to WDW close to 35-40 times but never eaten here. I have ADR's at CA Grill for May 1. I do not have a huge appetite and really want the sushi. Will I be frowned upon for not partaking of a main course ? Also, how does the DDP work here ? Is the sushi considered an appetizer ?
There are several categories : flatbreads, sushi, first course, main course. I'm just confused as far as DDP goes as we've never done that either.

thanks

We love CG- it's a must for us every trip. My ds jusdt chose to spend his 8th bday there. I too can do without an entree, just flatbreads, sushi and a cheese plate. It's yummy- but it is loud

MiaSRN62:
I can answer # 1--you won't be frowned upon.

As to # 2, we never do the dining plan, so someone else will have to provide that answer!

We very much enjoy CA Grill and it is DS (17) favorite resturant. He and DD (14) have been going there since they were very young. The wait staff is always excellent and the food very good, but occassionally I have had something that wasn't quite as good as I had hoped, but definately a wonderful place to experience and everyone should do it at least once.

To MiaSRN, no need to worry about being frowned on. I have had appetizers as a main course and even split meals with DD. The staff is always more than accomodating!

Enjoy and have wonderful trip! :goodvibes

I had some friends go to DW for their honeymoon and I gave them a dinner at CG. I love to eat there.

Thanks to Uncleromulus and mdsd8700 for reassuring me that ordering sushi as my main dish will not be a "no-no" in the eyes of the CA Grill :thumbsup2

I apolgize if I made it seem getting and appy or sushi only would be frowned on. I know its defanitely not, many ppl do it. Apparently my waiter was just concerned about his tip..lol

We ate at CG a little over a year ago and LOVED it.
We did it on the first night of our trip, and watching Wishes from our table was the perfect way to start it off.
It is pricy, but we thought it was worth it. :)

I haven't gone to CG in years. Last time we were there, it was mostly adults. I reserved night for my husband and I to have a romantic evening (late 29th anniversary gift). However, sounds like lots of kids now (and I have an 18 and 22 year old - so its not like I don't love kids), and thinking I might want to find quieter spot. What do you all think?

We did Cali Grill last Sept on our arrival date and celebrated our DS's birthday. We timed it for Wishes (which was 9) and adr was 7:15. We did let the hostess know that we would love to be seated by the window and she said that she'll try.
We were seated right by the window at 7:20 with sprinkles. :cool1:

As for food, they are all excellent. DS 7 loves sushi so he got deluxe sushi platter instead of kids meal. I had Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli and Port Tenderloin and DH had some kind of Flat Bread and Chocolate Cake. All were excellent and great. Our server was great and one of the best meals.

So if you don't mind splurging (either OOP/2TS), go ahead and try!

Also, I even saw a couple next to us, only ordering some cheese plate and couple glasses of wine. So you don't have to do full 3 course meal to eat at Cali Grill.

I'm going this June to celebrate my birthday, and I can't hardly wait!:yay:

Personally, while we love the food at California Grill, we've found it to be overpriced. Go as late as possible to (hopefully) avoid the obnoxious kids. If you're looking for a restaurant in the Contemporary, another option is The Wave.

I've done reviews of both The Wave and Cali Grill -

CG - http://www.disneytouristblog.com/featured-post/disney-contemporary-california-grill-dining-review/

The Wave - http://www.disneytouristblog.com/featured-post/the-wave-restaurant-review-disney-contemporary/

All things considered, I'd choose The Wave unless money is no issue. If money is no issue, head to Victoria & Albert's.

REALLY?

What obnoxious is the tone of your post.

Please get over yourself, especially at Disney World:confused3

We love it- I've ordered sushi as a main course and never had any problem-
we'll be back there in october- or my husband will pout.

WARNING! WARNING!!! ON APRIL 3 DO NOT GO TO CALI GRILL AS I WILL BE BRINGING ALL 3 OF MY "OBNOXIOUS KIDS" ALONG WITH DH AND I.
:rolleyes1
For real, you cannot tell me that all kids are obnoxious. Personally I have more of an issue with someone who makes a judgement such as this.

Anyway, to the OP go, have fun and bring your child(ren). From what I understand this is one of the most child friendly signatures. I'm looking forward to dining here along with other signatures as well on our vacation in less than 10 days now!

You're bragging about having obnoxious kids?:scared1: The poster did not say all kids were obnoxious. They were obviously talking about the obnoxious ones only.

I haven't ordered an entree from there in the past few visits. I'm perfectly happy ordering a combo of either sushi, appetizers, or soups and ordering dessert if I feel like having one.

The sushi and flatbreads are a great thing to order for sharing, and I like their soups and other appetizers, like the goat cheese ravioli thing.

There's no stigma for ordering the way you want. You're on vacation! If a server shows Attitude (with the capital A), that's grounds for speaking with a manager, IMHO.
