I'm looking for opinions of CG for an Acrophobe's point of view. I'm afraid my severe fear of heights would ruin the meal. It doesn't matter how much I want to do something, my fear always wins out. :guilty: It makes me nervous to even think about going out on the deck to watch fireworks. For anyone w/ severe acrophobia, who has dined at CG, would you go again? :thanks:

I probably wouldn't recommend the observation deck at all in your case. But there are plenty of tables away from the windows, but where you still have a view. I don't know if that would work for you.

At least you can stay away from the windows. In my case, I'm terrified of being stuck in an elevator and I understand that this is the only way up or down to the california grill! I'm already panicking just thinking about it.

If you love great tasting food then California Grill is a must. We finally went in January and had a wonderful dining experience. As far as the observation deck we didn't even go out on to it. It really wasn't an issue because we were in a hurry to get to the Pirate and Princess Party.
(I probably wouldn't have either because of my fear of heights.)

IMHO I wouldn't go... The food is fantastic but you always know how high up you are no matter where you are sitting. Believe me, I am not trying to be a downer but I wouldn't want it to ruin your experience there... Just my opinion

Oh, I wouldn't consider going out on the deck. :scared1: It really makes me nervous just imagining it from the safety of my couch. If we weren't seated near a window, I may be okay. I was just wondering how others in my situation had felt about it. Sometimes, just the thought of being that high scares me. :guilty:

I don`t have acrophobe but, if your nervous about eating at CG, you'll probably be nervous on the day leading up to your ADR. Is that restaurant really worth the extra stress it may cause you?
If this won't be a once in a lifetime trip why don't you go visit the restaurant and see if it's worth booking for your next trip? Maybe have a drink at the bar?
Another restaurant option that I like is Flying Fish at the Boardwalk. It has a similar atmosphere and I find that the food is just as good.

I hope you enjoy yourself. Irrational fears can be so debilitating. :(

That's kind of what I'm thinking, but I'd love to be able to talk myself into it.

They should have stairs somewhere... Don't fire code regulations state that you must have stairs in case of fire breaking out and elevators becoming stuck?

I feel your pain guys!I am irrationally scared of vomit, and fairly irrationally feared of elevators as well-more like just calustrophobic... I walked, well hobbled up, 9 flights of stairs with both legs in "moon boots" for the fractures in them because I refused to use the elevators at my doctors office. Now I use the elevators at work most days but I'm still fearful. Flying is not fun either...

We like Flying Fish too! :thumbsup2 We have one ADR to fill on our upcoming trip. This would be before or after Spectro. I thought I had narrowed it down to Kona or Narcoossee's. My DS chose Narcoossee's, of the 2. Unfortunately, the pics I looked at here don't really appeal to me, so I was thinking of suggesting CG instead. Maybe, Narcoossee's food is better than it looks.

I have the same problem with flying. I do it, because I'd rather fly than not travel. I have to endure every excruciating minute of it too. There's no sleeping on planes for me either, & drugs don't help. I spend the entire flight thinking about the fact that there's nothing under my feet. I do take Dramamine so I don't make the flight unpleasant for those seated near me. :scared:

They do have stairs somewhere but as far as I know, I don't think we can use them since you must be escorted up. :confused3

"I hope you enjoy yourself. Irrational fears can be so debilitating."

Its not an irrational fear. It is a fear and I dont' know why you would categorize it as irrational anymore than someone fearing a snake or deep water, etc.

To the OP, I too struggle with heights but I try very hard not to let it control me but I have limits. I have dined at CG and will be having my 25th anny with my wonderful DH there in Sept. You can get a table where you are not near the windows and still enjoy a lovely view and wonderful meal. You will be looking *out* over the view that way versus being right near the edge of the restaurant where you truly sense the height. In your case I would absolutely not go out for the fireworks. My intention is to ask if I may try to go out pre-fireworks and if I cannot handle it, we'll stay at our table. I'm not going to ruin it for myself by trying to push the issue.

We were at Yankee Stadium recently and our seats were awful!!!!! 5 rows from the very top of the stadium!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: Fortunately we were able to upgrade to better seats. I know what you go through. I was shaking, sweating, all but falling over, tears running down my face. We all have our personal limits and man that was waaaay over mine!!!!!! lol :rotfl2:

I'm curious as to why you'd even consider dining at CG, if you have a severe fear of heights. Is there a particular dish you're really wanting to try? Are you part of a larger group that's dead set on going to CG?

It's a very good restaurant, to be sure, but there are something like a dozen restaurants of similar quality on site, and all of them are on the first or second floor. The main thing that distinguishes CG from the rest of the pack is the view, and if you won't be able to look out the window without being very uncomfortable.....

Honestly, I'd look elsewhere. If you're already feeling nervous about it, I can't imagine how you'll feel the day of the meal. With all the wonderful dining choices at WDW, why put yourself through that much misery on your vacation?

Don't bother with CG. You're very aware up there that you're up high. There are lots of good restaurants that are on ground level. Choose one of those. Why go and pay a lot for a meal only to be miserable?

For example, Jiko is wonderful and at ground level. If you want steak, Shula's and Yachtsmen Steakhouse are both good. Lots of nice choices where you don't have to conquer a phobia just to be there.

We dined there last year and I LOVED it. I am terrified of heights and managed ok, I tried to go onto the deck but it was a no go :lmao: This is me who usually cries with fear when high up, I did have misgivings about going here but it is so worth it.

It was our anniversary dinner and they had given us a window table with a fantastic view of Epcot. I was horrified at the thought of sitting that close to a window but it was fine. I sat on the bench seat so I had my back to the window and DH sat opposite. In the end I spent more time looking at the view than I did at DH :rotfl2:

If the CG is not at the start of your holiday, why not go over to Contemporary and explain your situation - that you have a reservation for a few days time and you are afraid the height will spoil your meal. Ask if you could go up and just have a look, if it's a no go you could try and change your ADR to somewhere else.

One last thing, at first I was afraid to look out of the window but given a little time it was fine. This has worked in other places too, on our honeymoon we had a 32nd floor room in Vegas :scared1: with floor to ceiling glass

At first I was hellbent on going to check out if they couldn't change the room but by the second day I was happy to sit next to it and enjoy the view.

Sorry to prattle on but I do think it's worth a go, the food was soooooooo good we are going twice this time. I am genuinely terrified of heights and we had a lovely evening. I can highly recommend the pork and polenta it is to die for. Please PM if you want to ask anything else :)

The OP was the one that said it was an irrational fear.

To the OP - I have eaten at CG on a few occasions and I have a fear of heights. I was fine, even on the observation deck. With that said, there are actually much better restaurants to eat at. You are allowed to go up to the lounge to have a drink though and this may be the best way to see how you would handle the height if you chose to eat there one day.

I am so glad to see this thread. DH & I are going on a romantic vaca in '09 and this is the place we wanted to start off with for dinner & fireworks. I too have a great fear of heights. I think I will be ok inside by the window. There's some security for me, knowing the window is there. The deck will definately be a no-no. :scared1:

It's nice to know I'm not the only one and the opinions and suggestions in this thread have been very soothing. :flower3:

I was just going to point this out. ;) I do consider it irrational, because my rational mind will tell me I'm not in danger, but I still can't control my fear. It controls me, & I hate it.

Funny that you mentioned snakes. That's my other fear. It's as bad as heights, even plastic snakes & snakes on TV creap me out. I have a good reason for that one though. My older sister took me to see the movie "Rattlers", when I was 8. What was she thinking? :confused3 I have no idea why I'm so afraid of heights though. Noone else in my family is.

I know I couldn't handle the observation deck. I can sometimes tolerate heights, after I get used to it, if I'm looking at the view from a distance. My body freezes & won't allow me to go near the window.

I've have so been there. We had nose bleed seats for an NCAA tourney once. I tolerated it & even enjoyed it. It was the Tarheels afterall. ;) Needless to say, we only went to their games. There's no way I would have gone up there for any other teams. I have turned down free tickets to the Buccaneers, because they were high up.

I explained why I was considering going there earlier. I've copied the quote above.

I don't usually get really nervous about heights, other than flying, until the fact. I'm always convinced I can do it this time. (I have a "won't give up" mentality.):rolleyes1 I'm just trying to be proactive this time. My poor hubby has had to carry me off steps or to the top to ride a water ride down quickly, whichever is closer. When I get to a certain height, my legs go weak, shake, & lock up. They literally won't move. :sad2: I've passed out on high platforms before, at least what I consider high, most people probably wouldn't.

That's a good idea. If we go with CG, I'll probably send my DH up instead. He can usually judge what I can tolerate.

No way!!! :scared1: There's no way I could have walked all the way to the window. I've stayed on higher floors in hotels at the beach (not as high as 32), & couldn't even get close to the sliding door leading to the balcony. I can't look over a balcony on the 4th floor much less that high.

To the OP - I have eaten at CG on a few occasions and I have a fear of heights. I was fine, even on the observation deck. With that said, there are actually much better restaurants to eat at. Where would you recommend in the MK area?

No way could I handle CG. Heck, last year I was nervous going upstairs to eat at CHH. I have had 16 jobs and all but one were in one story buildings. The other was in a 4 story girl's dorm, where they paid me to be there all night. Couldn't pass that up. I won't go above the second step of a ladder, and open stairwells are a no go. However, I will climb on alomost any ride, if I don't have to climb to get to it, and I fly without problems. The bottom line is it's my irrational fear, and I live with that. It surfaces at times that surprise even me, and completely disappears in some situations. All this to say only you know what you can do and whatever you decide, don';t let it ruin a great day, either by going and being miserable, or not going and wondering.
And Lamandpercy, you don't know what a terrible fear of heights is.
