California Fires: Everyone ok?

Laguna Beach is mitigating the fire danger with goats and they haven't had a major fire in decades;
Goats are rented out around here as well albeit not for wildfire reduction. They are incredibly good at getting unwanted vegetation. One of the cities uses them to "mow" basically a park and moves them around from area to area during the time they are there.

Have you kept up on the weather events that have been going on in the nation over the weekend and into this week? Are you intimately knowledgeable about their impacts?

The CA wildfire is devastating but there are also other things going on too in the nation.

Your local news is always going to be the best. You'd probably be better off donating to charities/organizations that will help people affected by the CA wildfires than nitpicking on what you perceive should be covered on national news.
Yes I have. Sorry, I think a natural disaster that prompts 100,000 evacuations is world news. Professional opinion. And it took them 24 hours, but the World media are now in Los Angeles covering the fire.

EDIT: BREAKING NEWS. The President has canceled his trip to meet with the Pope because of the fires.

For those that do not know, in 2014, Californians voted to spend billions on new reservoirs (7.5 billion bond). NOT ONE RESERVOIR HAS BEEN COMPLETED. All that water going to the ocean. I have a friend who is a captain for the FD Sacramento and the surrounding areas were dispatched this morning to drive down. I also heard that Canada was sending their water planes (or helicopters, can't remember now). A relative that lives in the area (in a suburb that you wouldn't associate with high fire risk normally) had their fire insurance cancelled two months ago. The companies wanted to raise rates but the CA Insurance Commissioner wouldn't allow so the insurance companies cancelled the fire policy. It seems to go with others I've seen on twitter/X saying the same with their insurance. Now Hollywood is being threatened. Sunset fire now.

You're spending way too much time on this your efforts would be better served helping those affected in any way you personally feel you can that isn't about what you're making it about.

As for keeping up on what's been happening nationwide, I doubt that. Many people are focused on what happens in their own area as it affects them when it comes to weather or natural disasters. As far as evacuations go, A state that has almost 3 million people along with a state that has over 6 million essentially closed down for days, they couldn't evacuate anywhere because they were stuck, if you lost power in your home (and tens of thousands did) good luck getting out with 12-18+inches in a blizzard warning with sub zero temps (wind chill -5 to -15). I've never in my life seen all major highways along with local highways in my entire state shutdown and yet they did and not all of them are even open yet. But even as massive of a impact as it is I wouldn't expect people in Sacramento much less world wide to cover all the details much less complain multiple times on the internet that people on CNN aren't abuzz about it.

Please go donate where you can and don't worry about world/not world news.

Sorry, occupational hazard.

the states of Oregon and Washington have also dispatched numerous firefighting crews (in the hundreds and hundreds) and equipment.

after the northern California fires many homeowners in areas adjacent to the fires were notified when their yearly renewals came up that their insurance companies were opting to drop them from coverage entirely. decades with the same companies, thousands upon thousands in premiums/never a single claim but the companies want nothing to do with the general region.

I've wondered how this works when someone has a mortgage-does the lender, similar to with an auto loan find some overpriced barebones coverage to cover their investment?

I am in Ireland, and I use cal fire to keep up to date. I get the main headlines on the website of my local news, but then as I have friends in California, I use Google maps to actually see the locations of the fires and to check if fires are near my friends. I then use YouTube to get live reports from local on the ground media.

If someone from Ireland, halfway across the world from California can find live on the ground updates, then I don't understand why someone in the state of California is having issues and complaining.

In this digital age, a news story which is of interest to you may not be of interest to your local news, so instead of the old fashioned way of media choosing what to tell you, we now have so many tools available to us that allow us to choose what news we consume and how we consume it. Gone are the days when we have to wait until 6pm for the national broadcasters on tv to tell us what they want us to know.

With that out of the way. An update direct from people who actually live near the Eaton fire. They are not in an evacuation zone but have made preparations just in case. They had 80mph winds and theres a lot of trees down and other debris in their neighbourhood. The air quality is bad due to the winds spreading the smoke and ash.

That's not how insurance works, the no claim part. To pull out of an entire state or have high restrictions on a specific area is for a reason. In CA in many parts it’s not if but when will a wildfire strike. FWIW at the insurance company I worked for Colorado was also a higher wildfire risk and I believe another state but I'm blanking right now. But CA is a very high risk state for any insurance company to be in.

I would imagine the mortgage company does forced place insurance like they do when you don't have proof of homeowners insurance.

Praying for everyone's safety. Heartbreaking.

It's all over the channels here. I switch channels all day long to "listen" what the other has to say/report, etc. wether it's a news event or politics. It's pretty much the main news right now - kind of took over the LA truck attack/Jimmy Carter's funeral. They would have had more coverage had the CA fires not happened. Hardly any mention of the earthquake. I saw it on-line.

I also watch two Italian channels (RAI and Mediaset) - it is also in their news. Weather channels also talk about it most of the day as well as the winds there/here and the storm in the midwest.

I have to turn TV off since it is so depressing and scary. I hope they can get a handle on this as they say after tomorrow's winds die down.

As we are now in the age of AI and fake images, the Hollywood Sign is not on fire and the fire is no where near it. This is a screencap I just took from Google maps at 10am Irish time Thursday 9 January. I have marked where the fire is and where the sign is and where The Walk of Fame is.

Let's be honest, this response could be said to just about anyone on these boards. Many people have different perceptions of what should be happening in this world on a variety of topics. You can donate to a charity AND voice your opinion on a Disney chat site.

No one is denying the this is "world news". But expecting Networks to go "wall to wall" (which you were complaining that they weren't) is different. The fires ARE getting world coverage. Still doesn't mean there aren't other stories "world news worthy".

I'm speaking to complaining on and on about lack of worldwide and national coverage especially when posters have pointed out it is being covered and gave the places they saw it.

Why the lecturing?

It's been wall to wall on Fox the last 48 hours.
