This is always a fun one and it is next week. Anyone have a really great "WOW" kind of cake recipe to share? I'm a pretty good baker and would love to try something new. If you have a good one, tasty and eye appealing to elementary school kids, I'd love if you could share!

Well, if it's for elementary kids my DD loves any cake that has sprinkles on it. She will walk and walk and walk the cake walk until the sprinkle cakes are all gone or she wins.

Dang - I was going to recommend a Harvey Wallbanger bundt cake, but I guess not, seeing that it needs to be a kid's cake.

My kids would say make anything with icing  They wouldn't even care what it tastes like as long as there is icing.

Adults prefer pound cake, spice cakes, carrot cakes, red velvet cake, etc.

Stacked cakes look more inviting than sheet cakes, IMO. There's just something cake-y about a 2-layer cake, ya know?

Of course, you can always make cupcakes spread with chocolate icing and topped with candy pumpkins. My kids would pick that, easily.

How about one shaped in a figure like a rabbit or a cartoon character? You never know what a kid will pick.

Hi! I'm in the midst of baking for our church fall festival cake walk which is this weekend. I found lots of fun ideas on familyfun.com My criteria were things that were fun for kids but still relatively easy to do/decorate.

I'm doing:
balloon cupcakes- 6-8 cupcakes in multi colors placed on a board with matching curly ribbon.

purse cake- a 9 in cake cut in half and placed on the cut side together, frosted and decorated to look like a purse.

Pirate hat- two 9 in cakes cut and shaped to look like a pirate hat.

and the Lady bug- if I can figure out what to cook the "bowl" cake portion in...

I was going to make cakes from scratch but found $.46/box white cake mixes at Target at lunch today. There are lots of great ideas on that website.

Good luck and have fun.

I made easter bonnet style cupcakes one year that were a huge hit.
Mini cup cake glued w/frosting to a sugar cookie that is bigger forming the rim. Pour thinned out colored icing over them to coat then decorate with candy, gel icing, sprinkles etc. Use fruit roll ups to make the trim. These were fun to make too.

Kids love cupcakes - the cupcakes made in ice cream cones are also fun.
Fill a regular cone 2/3 full of cake batter, bake as instucted then cool and ice. Add sprinkles etc . The trick to these is how to transport. I take an old egg carton, remove the lid, then cut the bottoms out of the part where the egg goes, then flip it over creating a nice holder for the cones.

Ding Dong Cake!!!! Although DH says it looks more like a Suzy-Q.

Cake - can make a 9x13 or 2 9" rounds if you want to make 2 smaller cakes to donate.

1 box Duncan Hines Devil's Food cake mix
1 box instant chocolate pudding mix (4 serving size)
4 eggs
1/2 cup oil
1 1/4 cups water

Mix together, pour batter in to greased pan(s). Bake cake at 350 (use time for cake size on box) and let cool.

Meanwhile - make the fluff filling

1 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup crisco shortening
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Whisk together the flour and milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Set aside to cool completely. Once the flour and milk mixture has cooled, beat the 1/2 cup shortening and butter together on high speed for 4 minutes until light and fluffy. Add the sugar and vanilla and beat for 4 more minutes. Add the cooled milk mixture and continue to beat for 4 more minutes.

To assemble:

1. Place cake on serving dish. Cut cake in half horizontally. CAREFULLY lift off top piece and set aside. I use giant pancake turners for this, the cake is fragile.

2. Spread fluff filling over bottom half of cake. You don't need to go quite to the edge as the weight of the top piece of cake will squish the filling a bit.

3. CAREFULLY lift the top piece of cake back into position on top of fluff.

4. FROSTthe cake (I do the top only) with chocolate frosting. Make your favorite recipe or use a can. I prefer Pillsbury Chocolate frosting.

5. optional - decorate with sprinkles or whatever you want

I think it was last year in a magazine, (don't remember which one, Taste of Home, Family Fun or Kraft Food and Fun) was a rice krispie cake. Make rice krispy treat recipe and put in a very well buttered bundt or tube pan. I remember they also mixed in various chewy candy like juju bees, etc. I would imagine you could mix in anything. Once turned onto a plate, it stays in the cake shape.

Oh I would so walk for hours in a circle to get this cake! Love, love, love rice crispy treats!

It's not so much the flavor. More on how you decorate it. Cute animals are always a win.

I LOVE the ideas on Family Fun!

I made the pirate hat last year for my youngest DD's B-day party. BIG hit and so easy to follow! (I also made the mermaid cake but warning on that it is 2 cakes and rather big, not recommened for cake walk.)
