Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

I have a question that maybe people who live near the established locations can answer.... Since CBS doesn't use any preservatives, what happens to the days old cake that hasn't sold? Do they donate it? Sell it at a discount? Throw it in the trash? Genuinely curious. I know Panera usually donates their day-old bakery.

I still think it's a huge mistake to get rid of something like ESPN that provides something not readily available and to a wide audience.

To add yet another cake and sweets shop?

Stupid imo
You are entitled to your opinion, but I don’t necessarily agree. ESPN was its own niche product. I never went there because I don’t like sports or sports bars, and I am not the only one. Although the locations may have been popular, that doesn’t always translate to profitable. It feels like there are people (not you specifically) who blame CBS for ESPN closing, when that is not the case. I am sure Disney prefers to have as many third party restaurants as they can, to reduce their financial risk. Swapping ESPN for a third party restaurant did that. If ESPN had been raking in the profits, it would still be there.

CBS didn’t cause the closure of ESPN. Disney closed ESPN because they wanted or needed to. Just like whatever goes in where Big River Grill used to be has nothing to do with why BRG closed. It’s disappointing when a restaurant we love closes, but it’s not the fault of the new restaurant that moves in. I may not go to CBS because of the prices, but I still hope it’s successful. The BW area needs more successful restaurants. If there are too many cake and sweets shops, the ones who are not profitable will close and something new will go in their place.

Possibly beoucse the prices are ridiculous compared to the other locations

Ice tea at Broad ripple $4 and includes refills. At Boardwalk $8.

Millionaire cake $16 vs $26.

Any Cake bake regulars are hardly going to visit at these prices.
I think the location upcharge is inevitable. I haven't been to the Indiana places, but I feel they're not going to be as lovely as the Orlando location, being situated between Epcot and the shimmering lake.

This☝️☝️ - All of this.

We’ve been DVC members at the Boardwalk for 25 years. This is not the Boardwalk vibe. At all.

We have no issue spending a few hundred dollars for dinner & drinks at a good WDW restaurant. But with two grown sons in their 30s, it certainly won’t be here (it doesn’t help that grabbing a burger at ESPN was a favorite part of their BWV vacation experience for 2 decades 😬).

For me personally, if traveling with a girlfriend for a weekend getaway, I’ll probably try it for a cocktail & a piece of cake, but suspect it will be a 1 & done.

I wish them luck, but I don’t give it more than a couple of years. Sigh.
We are the same but Beach Club Villas member. Agree with you on the Vibe comment. Someone has spent millions on this place and I suspect there are backers/investors involved. We'll eat there and it looks like we will enjoy it. But we will do Trattoria and Flying Fish and others way more than Cake Bake. I think they would have been a better fit in Disney Springs. Good luck to them.

Totally agree. We love staying at the Boardwalk villas. Not sure how an Indiana based cake shop fits on a Jersey Boardwalk. Disney Springs, yes, but the Boardwalk?

Agreed. Given there’s already a high-end, high-quality restaurant in Flying Fish (which we love) and also a solid Italian option in Trattoria (which we frequent more for breakfast than for dinner but do enjoy) I just think they missed the mark with the BWV demographic. Lots of families. It would have been nice to have a mid-range, more casual eatery with pub fare etc.

Maybe the local market will fill the void, but the location & parking will likely be an issue.

Time will tell!

I mean, how many people travelling to DW are regulars at the Cake Bake shop in Indiana anyways? I don’t think they’re looking for regulars here. They’re just looking to capitalize and expand on the brand. If they are a hit in DW, they’ll probably have restaurants popping up in several US cities.

I know. Like an owner of 2 successful restaurants wouldn’t have done her due diligence before spending 2 years & what I’m assuming was hundreds of thousands of dollars before opening her next site (& the accompanying offsite bakery). 🙄
You mean like THIS multimillion dollar failure by a very successful company that overestimated its appeal?

They already have a national presence with their sales deal with Williams-Sonoma. Will it be enough? D/K but please pass the popcorn.

I just wish they would open up already! It's been what, 3 years now that we are waiting? And now we don't have BRG anymore? The BW area really needs to get its act together and fill in the vacant eateries. I personally can't wait for the CBS to open, and I wish they would put in something similar to BRG again. BRG was a great place to go that didn't require advance reservations and they had a pretty good burger. For what it's worth I was never a fan of ESPN, in 24 yrs of ownership at the BW we probably only ate there twice. It was nothing to write home about IMHO.

COSTCO.COM sells their cakes, $160 for an 8" cake.

CBS has partnerships with Tiffany, William Sonoma and Pottery Barn Teen.

Posters suggest their existing locations are gold mines.

Posters may be underestimating prospects.

I'm still surprised how much $ people are willing to spend at Starbucks.

I'm surprised, not really, how much money people are willing to give Disney for mediocre to poor food.

Absolutely no similarity with the starcruiser

I don't recall anyone saying ESPN closed because of the cake shop that's extremely overpriced and not unique.

Many may have not loved ESPN but it was unique based on other Disney restaurants at the time. Nowhere else you could grab some food and watch a game.

Cakes? Etc? All over WDW

I cannot believe how many people hope it fails! Hellooooo people it has been empty for literally almost five years. ESPN is gone. It isn't coming back (and we loved ESPN). Do we all really just want it to be an empty building aka Big River Grill?

So much hate for the prices. Have you seen Space 220? When I look at the menu there are some prices that are not out of range of half the restaurants in my town (and I live in po dunk Central Valley California in one of the poorest areas of the state). Maybe I am immune to it because I live in California. I don't know.

I guarantee you if they put the old Tangled character breakfast there no one will be able to get in. Remember when Trattoria was the hottest ticket going? Offer a mother daughter tea... bam.

It won't fail. Disney will help make sure it doesn't fail because it does no good to have an empty building.
