Caitlyn Jenner

Given that every cover of Vanity Fair ever has had the cover model airbrushed to hell and back, I don't think it sends any particular message that Caitlin is also photoshopped. I'd prefer things were different, but as it is now, no one -- trans or not -- should look to a magazine cover for a glimpse of what a REAL person actually looks like.

I can't imagine that a man who was already very rich and very famous would have his genitals surgically removed, get breast implants, change his name and live as a woman....just for more money and more fame?

Good heavens, he's already got more money than anyone could ever spend. And he spent most of his adult life as a major celebrity because of what he did at the Olympics.

No, he didn't do it for money. Or fame.
His genitals haven't been removed.

While I can understand that it must have been very difficult to deny the person he felt he truly was for his whole life, I also feel it's not insignificant that he made choices that deeply affected his spouses and/or their relationships. Three marriages, with children of all three relationships? I think it's fair to say that his wives deserved better from him. I also feel that it must be wrenching for his children to want their parent to find true happiness, yet on some level feel that their father has died and they're expected to simply embrace this new woman with joy and happiness.

As much compassion and understanding he feels he deserves for his suffering, I think his families have suffered a great deal without having any idea why or any control over it.
I completely agree, on all counts.

Oh, I don't think it was done for fame. I am starting to get the feeling there is a big push underway to profit from it. $$ from the athlete glory days is gone. I wouldn't be surprised he took a beating in this divorce & not much of the previous reality show $$ is left considering the lifestyle. To maintain the level of spending more $$ will have to be captured.

1) Caitlyn Jenner has said that we should be using she/her pronouns--it is offensive to do otherwise
2) It doesn't matter what surgeries have or have not been done, we should not be talking about anyone's genitalia
3) The motivation behind all the media doesn't really matter because this is all going to be HUGE for trans* visibility and acceptance
4) If you're still confused or worried about what terms to use when talking about this or any other transgender person, here's a handy link:

Probably as recently as this weekend articles were still being published with the disclaimer that Bruce Jenner had said the masculine pronouns were appropriate. Simply because a magazine has previewed TODAY does not mean it's appropriate to lecture people about it within hours. Being transgender and deciding to transition does not entitle anyone to expect the public to dance on a strong in attendance and know exactly how to be supportive and accepting at the drop of a hat. If you expect tolerance you give tolerance in return, accepting people for their flaws as well.

The following quote is apparently from the Vanity Fair article. I got it from a link to The Today Show article that someone shared on fb.

"I have high hopes that Caitlyn is a better person than Bruce. I'm very much looking forward to that," Jenner's oldest son, Burt, 36, told the magazine."

It must be hard for her children (mostly the boys from his previous marriages) to listen to all this praise of her. Bruce was apparently a really crappy father to them. There's no excuse for that. They deserve praise for supporting her even though Bruce's gender identity is (at least partly) being used as an excuse for him being a bad Dad to them.

Its funny when people say she wanted the fame or whatever and she didn't have to do this all out in the public and be so open and fame-*****. But the media is what forces that. She was being hounded by media with her picture all over crappy magazines speculating that Bruce was turning into a woman like it's shameful or outrageous. So I kinda like that she's just embracing it and being positively open now. It might be interesting to some people, or it may bore them. If it bores you... There are a billion other interesting topics out there to focus on.

When you make everything about your gender struggles public, expect people to comment on them. If he doesn't like the pronouns used to describe him, oh well, maybe he should have kept it private.

Yup.
I'm trying to separate Bruce and Caitlyn in my posts. Things that happened before Caitlyn was a person known us were done by Bruce.
I guess we should now pretend Bruce never existed or be called intolerant.

Whoa, that's a very telling comment. Heartbreaking when you think about it. While I have difficulty conceiving how challenging it must be to feel that you don't belong in your own body or gender, I can see how hard it must be to be the child with a parent so overwhelmed with that struggle that your needs are overlooked. This story isn't and shouldn't be all about Bruce's bravery and struggle. I hope he has acknowledged his continuing to make the choices he did hurt a lot of innocent people.

Well, then it's time for the general public to use this as a moment to learn the common courtesies that will be standard within the end of the decade. If you don't know what pronouns to use, it's a safe bet to either ask the person if you know them or to use neutral pronouns like 'they/them'.

I think the other poster was trying to say people need a little time to remember to use a different pronoun. When you've known someone as a he for the last 40ish years, you can't expect them to immediately and always remember that person is now a she.
Lecturing adults just turns them off from your message.

He signed a contract (and I said he because he did as Bruce), I'm pretty sure a gun wasn't held to his head. The media isn't forcing her to do anything, she is making the choice to profit from what is going on in her life. You can spin it any way you like but she has a choice, and she's the one who made it.
I don't find it boring, its current "news" up for discussion, that means we are all free to share our opinions, even if they aren't in support or praise of her.

LOL Not quite, but nice try. :)

Well, I am a young person, but that just means that I've spent more time being aware of the LGBT+ community and therefore I DO know more about the terms and etiquette. I stand by my original point. This media surge is an educational moment for those generations who have not been aware of the trans* community. It's time to stop making snide comments or gossiping about these issues and start learning what it's like to be in a world where more and more people are brave enough to come out regardless of what people say. I'll stop being 'pedantic' when trans* people stop killing themselves because they're too afraid of being attacked for who they are.
