Caitlyn Jenner

I find the idea of names having to be "age appropriate" to be off putting.
If she is happy that's great, but I'm sure she doesn't look anything like the cover on VF. I saw someone who was very average looking then being airbrushed and she look beautiful.

I watched the video of the photo shoot. Can't airbrush that. She looked pretty much like she does in the photo. Like Jessica Lange, truth be told.

I think there is a big difference though in a woman getting married and changing her name then a man changing to a woman and subsequently changing his/her name. Apples and oranges.
How so? Both situations involve a person changing one half of their legal name. Both parties then have to follow up with their various accounts to notify them of the change, get their friends and coworkers accustomed to using their new name, etc. It seems like a pretty identical process to me unless I'm forgetting something.

Oh please. There's a big difference and you know, it.
No, I'm not playing stupid. How is the legal process and all that it affects any different for changing a last name vs. a first name? The legalities of changing one's name is separate from appearance, gender, gender identity, etc. If you know a reason why the process is so greatly different for a transgender woman than it is for a newly married woman, please enlighten me.

Actually, I found the analogy helpful (especially the Michelle Obama example). I have troubles figuring out what name/gender to use when referring to something done when the person was presenting as the original gender and using the original name. If one thinks of it like Michelle Obama, using the current name makes sense. So thanks.

I was more referring to going back to change Olympic records, legal documents, etc. I would think going forward it makes sense to refer to her as Caitlyn Jenner, while preserving accuracy for the past, since it was, at the time, Bruce Jenner who actually won.
Hmmm, I wonder if the Olympic records have been changed for Cassius Clay becoming Mohammad Ali.

Was he was known as Cassius Clay when he competed in the Olympics? I didn't know that. That would be a good example of how they handle it in the past.

My admittedly fuzzy recollection was that he changed his name after the Olympics. (Yes, I'm old).

I looked this up yesterday. If you go to the IOC website and look at the boxing medals won in 1960 in Rome, a certain weight class lists the gold medal winner as Cassius Clay. However, if you click on Clay's name, or do a search for Cassius Clay, it brings up a page titled Muhammad Ali.

Someone asked about single female athletes who later married and adopted their husband's surnames. I had a crush on a certain female East German speedskater in the 1980s. Karin Enke won medals both in 1980 at Lake Placid and 1984 at Sarajevo. And she's listed in the records as such. To my dismay, she reappeared in 1988 at Calgary under the name Karin Kania. She won a few more medals and at the time she was listed as Kania. However, she divorced the Kania guy and yesterday the current records for 1988 have her as Enke again.

So I don't know if there's any clear policy. As of yesterday, the 1976 Montreal decathlon winner is recorded as Bruce Jenner. And I believe it should remain that way. Like Ali, if one does a search for Bruce Jenner, the athlete's bio could have the new name Caitlyn.

(East German female speedskaters seemed to make a habit of changing names. Karin Enke was single in 1980, married and changed her name to Karin Busch in 1981. She divorced and in 1984 was Enke again. Late 1984 she became Kania. Back to Enke in the early 90s, and is now Enke-Richter. There was also a Gunda Kleemann/Niemann/Stirnemann and an Andrea Ehrig/Mitscherlich/Schone.)

Has she legally changed her name? I know she prefers to be called Caitlyn but is that now the legal name?

Whenever I hear Cassius Clay, I think of the clip from Coming to America where they debate the Cassius Clay/ Mohammed Ali name change. I would post it here, but it has a some profanity. Still hilarious though. It's a good one to google.

Yes, and now with Golden State in the championship, every time Klay Thompson makes a basket I have to hear--"His momma call him Klay, I call him Klay" from dh.

He can pick whatever name she wants. I am guessing that Bruce was thinking about this change for a long long time. He probably has wanted to be Caitlyn since the time when that name was popular. At that point he thought, when I do this I will be Caitlyn.

I read that his assistant, Rhonda, just recently suggested the name Caitlyn to him and he liked it and went with it. Before that, he had considered the name Heather in the 80's.

I was given a mans name when I was born, so I guess I would just keep my old name.

Sorry, but I have no idea what you are trying to say here. Could you please re-state?

It is just so sad that Bruce chose to be that way. And that I am proud to be a woman. And would not change it for the world. Sorry I didn't clarify it earlier.

Choose to be like what? Are you suggesting that she choose to be transgender? Or are you questioning how she acted in the photo shot? Or the fact that she is doing a reality show? Or something else?
