Buying SS with DVC vs OKW resale

We currently are debating between getting 150 "new" points at SS vs a 150 pt resale at OKW. The price difference is about $600, once you factor in Disney incentives for SS and the resale closing costs for OKW.

The clear plus for SS is the extra 12 years. But comparing the two resorts on their own merits, what would you do?

TIA,

Erica

I would also look at the point cost for what you think you will be using the most and during what season. A week in a Studio at OKW in Choice (Oct-Nov) is 82 points while a studio at SSR is 97 points 18% more.

Remember that although you won't have the 11 month window advantage at OKW, it will be the second largest resort after SSR, when completed, and does now and probably will offer good availability at the 7 month window.

You'll pay $600 more for an additional twelve years of ownership??? I know what my decision would be.

You can use the SSR points anywhere, so the point cost per night/week is a non-issue. The relevant issues are dues (about the same) and 11 month window, which as fkj2 correctly points out is probably not a biggie.

We first bought resale at OKW, and we've been very happy with that. We eventually bought in at SSR also, and we're quite happy with that. It seems to us and from what I've seen here that getting in to OKW within the 7 month window is maybe a little easier that doing the same at SSR. SSR still has fewer rooms and will always be the new kid on the block compared to OKW. The one bedrooms at OKW are much larger that SSR, but SSR is fine, oh so fine.

If we were doing it today, we'd probably go straight for SSR. The $600 difference for 12 more years would be the deciding factor for us. You can stay at OKW whenver you want to, most likely. You just won't be able to reserve more that 7 months in advance.

Yes, right now availability at OKW at 7 months may be good, depending on when you plan to stay and type of room. Has anyone tried to book first week of October at OKW?
I think that it will be more difficult soon as more points are sold at SSR and future resorts. So it should be considered.
SSR will be the easiest resort to book at 7 months if it isn't already.

This is what makes me hesitate. Truth be told, we really prefer the three smaller DVC sites, but like the price and the dues better at SS and OKW. As SS gets bigger, and those folks enter the ranks for 7-month reservations at other resorts, well, I just worry that we won't get in at VWL, BCV or BWV.

I know, I know, buy where you want to stay, right? But really, to get the points we want, it's substantially less at SS or OKW. And at least we'd have the ability to make a reservation 11-months out on-site, no?

Yes, if you buy at SSR you will have the ability at the 11 month mark to get accomodations on site. We were able to stay at OKW during the popular F&W festival and during the time of MNSSHP last year and we booked the accomodations less than 2 months out. There's no guarantee, but this was well after the 7 month time that anyone can book anywhere.
