Buying something with bad reviews?

I feel like I am missing a big/'wow' gift for DD(4). I was looking at getting her this http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12886010 with a 20% off coupon. She LOVES Rapunzel and is already getting a few of the MagiClip type princesses (though she really only loves Rapunzel and they don't make a Rapunzel MagiClip) so I thought they could all play together in the tower. The problem is that it got really bad reviews, pretty much everywhere I have looked. I don't think there's much point in getting a wow gift that is going to have problems but I think she would really love a Rapunzel tower. What would you do? I really have to stay right around $40 and like I said, Rapunzel is her one true love.

It only has one review there. I never trust just one. Is it reviewed in other places, perhaps Amazon, etc.?

If this is the only review you can find, can you live with knowing you might need to rebuild the tower a few times?

It looks like a cute, WOW gift to me.

i agree with pp that 1 review is not much to go on.

also, my solution to a tower that kept falling apart would be super glue :)

seems that "the day after christmas" might be a bit of an exageration on getting rid of the tower!

Probably depends on how rough your child is on it too. My 3 year old, forget it, I'd have to glue it to keep it together becuase he is just curious he'd want to take it apart just to put it back together.

My neice on the other hand who is the same age, would place nicely calmly gently and it would probably be fine.

I think the only review that will count is going to be your daughters'. I would get the doll if it is here one big love. ]

Have a happy day.

It is reviewed other places (the tower is, not the 'deluxe set'). And they are all generally 1 or 2 stars. She would love all the other stuff that comes with the set, I'm just worried about the tower, aka the big part of the big gift.

I would super glue or hot glue it together. We got dd a Barbie playhouse a couple years age that was all plastic. Pieces kept falling off and it drove me crazy. I hot glued everything together and it worked great. You just will have to store in one big piece. I would get it.

#1 really read the reviews sometimes a bad rating and you read it the reason for the bad rating is in my opinion NOT really Bad. #2 if its what your daughter loves and wants GET IT FOR HER.... :) its her special gift not the people reviewing it

check amazon, i really trust the reviews there and like other posters have said, don't trust 1 review. Most of the time people will take the time to post a bad review but not a good one so you have to take that one review with a grain of salt.

If you really want to get your DD this toy you may not want to read what I am about to write... I got DD this tower for her birthday and it is a nightmare. I have superglued all the pieces and they keep falling off. Rapunzel's hair is always missing (you can't glue it), so, I have a bald Rapunzel and a hysterical 4yr old who can't find her hair. If I had read the reviews before I bought it, I would have convinced DD to get a different toy :(

I agree...Amazon has great reviews. That being said, one review will not make or break it for me.

Since she loves Rapunzel, I would get it for her. Even if it doesn't last forever, she'll still have fun with it for a while.

I normally look at the bad reviews and judge if I can live with the bad reviews or not. If I can't, then I either return or don't buy the product because I don't want to have the feeling" I should have listen to other's people" or "I shouldn't have bought this, it has a bad reviews for a reason". I bought a fire station for my son when he was 4 years old, all the reviews I read said that the door will not stay put and was very frustrated for a young kid. I bought the station thinking that I would just not use the door. However, my 4 years old loved to play with the door and sure enough was frustrated because the door didn't stay put! I couldn't glue it because it would defeat the purpose of opening and closing the door. So everytime he played the toy, I was there to put the door back in for him. I still have the toy, he is 6 now and he can put the door back and still love the fire station! So see if you can live that tower and will you be there for her to put the tower back every time it collapse.

If you are finding quite a few 1 and 2-star reviews, I personally would pass on it. If the average review is 3 or more stars, I would purchase it.

It would really stink to think you bought an awesome gift only to have her so frustrated with it because it won't stay together. I'm not sure what parts come loose...as others said, you may be able to super glue it, but maybe not depending on what comes apart.

Worst case scenario: Buy it, open it up and assemble it. See if it will stay together and if not, decide whether or not you can glue it or make it work properly. If not, return it and pick something else out. :)

I'm having the same issue with one of the presents I want to get my son! I've decided that I'll go with it and then just repair as needed because I can't find anything similar.

Have you looked for other Rapunzel towers? The daughter of a friend of mine has one but I am pretty sure it's all pink. (But I have a boy so I know nothing of girl toys, lol).

We have this tower, have had it for 2 years and have never had a problem with it. I can't even imagine what about it falls apart? The only thing I can think of is the hair falling from the tower comes apart easily, but not that easily. Our Rapunzel's hair stays on ok, and if it comes off it takes one second to put it back on. I do keep the parts in a separate box and my kids usually use a different Rapuzel doll to play with, but heck my 2 year old plays with this just fine and loves it.
