Buying small contract from timeshare store without prior contract

We're thinking about possibly buying in sometime in the near future. Our question is, if I buy from The Timeshare Store (or another resale place), and buy a smaller contract (say, 50 points), does it matter that I don't have a previous contract? I know to buy from Disney you have to buy, I think, 150 points at least (I'm sure you guys know what the rules exactly are). Get what I'm asking? Sorry, I'm really new to this whole thing. I read a bunch of things, but couldn't find anything discussing this.

If you want to purchase directly from Disney, you must purchase 160 points in a single contract if you don't already have points. If you buy a resale first, you can buy any resale you want. And once you have points, you can buy any number of points directly from Disney.

A Direct from Disney purchase can be much quicker than a resale (resales usually take around two to three months to complete until you have points to use depending on everything involved).

Good luck making up your mind.

Cool, thanks. :)

We'd really only be wanting to start out with about 50 points to begin with, so that's why we're thinking resale. Then, adding on later in life possibly. Glad to know if we buy a resale, we don't have to do the 160.

Thank you so much for your help! :thumbsup2

Buying a small resale contract is a excellent way to get started. You can learn all about the DVC and Member Services without the huge initial outlay of cash. By banking and borrowing, you can get 150 points for a nice vacation. Good luck.

Exactly what we were thinking. Start small, see how we like it.

One other quick question, I heard something about "outrageous annual fees", and I was wondering, just how outrageous are we talking? People's opinions on that can differ very greatly, so I wanted to know how much it is, or, if it's a case-by-case basis, what're the rules on figuring it out?

about $5 a point---goes up about 3% a year. Also, with a resale--pay attention to your use year (UY)--as any add-on points thru DVC directly have to have the same UY as your original resale smaller contract.
We bought a 50 point resale contract and are VERY happy. We plan to add on 50 points at AKV next year.

Alright. That's not too bad.

How do I know through a resale when the contract expires?

We started with 100 point contract from TTS. Then added on 35 points from Disney (because there were no closing costs) and then another 50 points from Disney. We now have 185 points (and I'm working on DH for another add on).

BCV, BWV, VWL, VB, HHI all expire in 2042.
SSR expires in 2052.
AKV expires in 2057.
OKW expires either in 2042 or 2057 depending on if the owner bought the 15 year extension or not that was recently offered. You will have to ask the reseller. Plus the price will undoubtedly be higher for a contract with the extension vs a contract without the extension.
