Buying BWV as a newbie

We have friends who are interested in buying into DVC, but they don't want SSR. They are hoping to get BWV, but I wondered if they can buy direct from Disney into one of the sold out resorts or if they would have to go resale?

Thanks!

From what I understand (and, admittedly, I'm just starting out reading these forums and learning about DVC for a projected purchase in about 4 to 6 months), you CAN buy at the "sold out" resorts through Disney. You have to insist, though...sometimes quite firmly. All the minimums and rules still apply. In addition, I'm not sure they offer the incentives for the sold out resorts, so you may end up paying close to the same price as SSR....if not a bit more (if you take the "big" incentive)...in addition to having the shorter contract length.

These are precisely the sorts of things my wife and I are discussing and hashing out now. :)

Yes. Your friends can buy BWV directly from Disney. Minimum 150 points if they are not already members. $95 per point (although I heard rumors that may be going up).

If they do not have a particular Use Year that they are requesting, they might not have to wait at all. I was able to purchase 200 BWV points last month from Disney with no wait. However, if Disney's available points are running low (haven't ROFR'd many people), or your friends want a specific UY, they may have to wait for the points to become available. No telling how long the wait would be - probably not more than several months, but no guarantees.

As said earlier the amount of points and UY is the big determinant of how quick you get your points My current contract At SSR has a feb use year and I called my guide to ask about 300 points at BWV with a feb use year he told me that use your and that many points could take up to 8 months or as little as 2 months, but He said like 150 points with august UY would be much quicker.

I did the very thing you are describing last year. They will push SSR but they will sell you BWV if you stand firm that it is the resort you want to buy.

We got 200 BWV points last June with no wait from Disney.

I purchased 150 points at BWV in February and had no wait at all. There was a slight SSR push, but the Friends & Family deal had just ended, so I said I wasn't interested in paying the current price, so that was that (I probably would have gone for SSR with F&F, but I was too late).

Understand that there is no guarantee you can get points from Disney at a previously sold out resort and thus "insisting" on it won't necessarily work. Once sold out, the only points that will be available are (a) ones that Disney gets back either because of a foreclosure or through the exercise of right of first refusal when owners try to sell or (b) Disney expands the resort and adds units. BWV, beginning a couple years ago, had an expansion when they eliminated most of the DVC office space there and starting turning them into new rooms, making more points available. Thus new points became available that way. However, purchasers now or in the future may not find the ease of getting points there as those are mostly now going and you will need to buy the ones Disney gets back from foreclosures or ROFR and that inventory varies at any given time. You can, however, always get on a wait list for those type of points in the future.

I had no problems buying at BWV last month. Long after the elimination of the office space that you are discussing. In fact they had more points available than I wanted to purchase in my UY.

There have been several people here who have had little to no difficulty buying in the sold out resorts direct from Disney over the past couple of months and posted about it here. All it takes is a phone call to your guide to find out if something is available.
