Buying Aulani with DVC promotion

Disney is running a promotion that allows anyone to get 15 extra points for every 100 points you buy at Aulani.

Is anyone taking DVC up on that? The minimum purchase is 100 Aulani points.

If you do decide to take DVC up on this offer do you still pay maintenance fees for those 15 points every single year. I am assuming you do.

Minimum purchase at today's rate is $160 per point or $16,000. The promotion saves you $2400 on the purchase price of 100 points.

By the way the points accrue per 100 points so 100=15 extra points and 200=30 extra points and 300=45 extra points etc etc.

The maintenance fees for Aulani are 6.43 per point. 15 x 6.43 =$96.43.

Just another way of marketing points. Buyers need to do the numbers, you are really buying 115 points at a reduced price for a limited time, they aren't really giving you extra points.

Like all DVC resorts Aulani may be a cost savings for people who love it enough to vacation there every couple of years.

I received the mailer yesterday ... read it ... and (gasp!) stuck it on the fridge door. I don't know why I couldn't toss it in the trash. I hear it calling to me. Oh, my! It is so silly. I know it is only a discount on (overpriced) points -- but the approach must be striking a chord in my heart. So silly.

I have been thinking about adding on at Aulani, but I really don't like the current offer. You aren't getting much...you get free points sure, but then you are paying for them for the rest of the contract, like usual.

The previous offer was worth much more. About a 5$ discount on the points if you bought 150 (or maybe it was 200) and a big developer credit of about 1500$. So it brought the PPP down from 155$ to about 135$. I'm going to wait for something like that to come around again, maybe in the fall/winter.

I guess I think differently regarding the number of resale contracts for Aulani. I think they are pretty limited especially when trying to match UYs.

Yeah, UY can be tricky, but there are usually at least a few aulani resales, and they are def priced lower than VGF or GCV. A different UY for Aulani may not be so terrible, anyway, depending on when you would want to go.

IF I were going to buy a timeshare in Hawaii (I'm NOT), it would most certainly not be Disney.

The biggest problem with DVC is that it has timeshares in only five locations on Earth -- WDW, VB, HHI, Disneyland, and Aulani. It's great for WDW, but that's about it. Buying Aulani is just compounding the problem.

And the annual fees at Aulani are outrageous -- $6.43 X 15 points is not the math. The math is $6.43 X 115 points = $739.45. Plus, isn't there a Hawaiian occupancy tax on top of that for each night you stay?

And 115 points buys exactly what? Not much.

If I wanted to visit Hawaii regularly, I would buy another good timeshare system resale -- for pennies on the dollar.

That would not only give me more than one option in Hawaii (multiple options on multiple islands -- all of them better than Aulani), dozens of more options elsewhere in that system, and much lower acquisition and annual costs.

I don't pretend to be a expert on Hawaii, but I would certainly look at Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham and other major systems.

We own st Aulani...total of 340 points. Also own at six other Disney resorts and have over 1400. We have gone there three times and will return again next year. We love it. It is my husbands fav place ever. We bought early on at the presale price. Can't even remember how much Paid. And got the initial maintenance fee which was too low and got several executives fired. So overall we feel it is a good deal for us. We get a one bedroom ocean front for 50 points a night. And usually stay a week or more. Obviously we use points from other resorts but never have to reserve more than seven months out so it works out well. We live in Chicago so our biggest cost outlay to get there is air. We have been to all the other islands and love them too. But for us there is something about Aulani that makes us happy and content. We never leave the resort except for dinner or to go shopping. By the way, our room would cost over $1000 a night if we paid for it, now would we go every year if we had to pay several thousand dollars for a stay...probably not. But since it is paid for already, we don't have to think about it. Someday we will bring the whole family and get the ocean front three bedroom villa. As you can tell, we are emotional buyers, and we are blessed that we can afford to be.

LOL -- you are evil, pure evil, pouring on all the good reasons to succumb to this offer! (Just kidding, I'm very glad you are enjoying your decisions and your time at Aulani! )

As for me, I must keep my priorities straight: I want a new tractor ($$); if the drought continues I'll need a new/deeper well ($$$); we are still rebuilding from the fire this past May ($$$); etc. Yep, keep my eyes on the goals ... not on Aulani.

Sigh. I'll glance at a few photos from our visit and picture myself there now. Yep, feeling better already. That ought to tide me over for a bit.
