Buying an additional upgrade after complimentary ?

Has anyone gotten their room assignment, which reflected an upgrade in categories, then paid for an upgrade to a higher category BEFORE getting to the port?

For instance, if one booked a cat 12 gty, was upgraded by DCL to a cat 9, but was considering "buying up" to a cat 6. Would the price be what the tier prices were at the time of booking, and from a cat 9 to a 6, or is there some set formula for upgrading when the cruise is imminent? And would the increase be counted from the upgraded category or the previous category at which you booked?

:D

I believe you would pay the difference in price from what you originally paid to what the category would be. That really is only the fair way, after all, the upgrade fairy visited you once!
From what I do remember reading in the past, this is the way that DCL does it.

My recollection of some previous posts is that if you wait and upgrade at the port that it was from your category after being upgraded. My concern is that the ship will be full and no upgrades can be purchased at that time.

I don't think I understand your response. If DCL gave a passenger an upgrade, then required payment from that upgraded category to any higher one, then I don't see how that would be asking for a second "visit" from the "upgrade fairy"? Are you saying that it would only be fair to give up the complimentary upgrade entirely before paying for an upgrade? Maybe my question wasn't clear, but I certainly did not mean that there was an expectation of a second complimentary upgrade!:D

Tinkmom - Sorry, but cjsmith is correct.

Unless something has changed, you "pay" for your upgrade from the original category to your desired category. I completely understand your question and I believe cjsmith did also...we know you aren't asking for a second complementary upgrade, but by not "paying" for your first upgrade and then trying to get a second upgrade, you are asking for credit on something you didn't pay for.

This January we received an upgrade from Cat 10 to Cat 8 with our docs; then when we arrived I asked about upgrade, and they offered us an upgrade to Cat 5 with the priced based on starting with the Cat 8. I double checked, because I had heard that we would have to start with our original paid category.

This was right at the check-in desk. I confirmed she was quoting a Cat 8 to Cat 5 rate, evan after I told her we had started with Cat 10. It was a good rate too! Perhaps because the ship was nowhere near full for that cruise.

So, at least in my one personal experience, they didn't base it on the original paid category.

Tink:

My rule of thumb is this when it comes to Disney:

Just ask, the worst they can do is say no (or in this case, pay from the original upgrade price), and a lot of times they will say yes.

Upgrading at the port is most always cheaper than upgrading before hand....if there is something available.

Bottomline is....book a category you will happy with and don't hope for an upgrade....no sense in being disappointed if one does not come through.

This may be how they do it at the port, but not necessarily how they do it prior to the port wich is what the Op asked. I just checked with my neighbor who was upgraded as she had booked a gty cabin last summer. She tried to further upgrade prior to leaving and was told she would have had to pay the price difference based on what she had previously paid to DCL and what the new category price was that she now wanted. She also was told to check at the port and did, but nothing else was available as it was a 4th of July cruise and they were sold out.
