Buying additional points for a stay…

Hi All -

Brand new DVC owner. Not sure how/when to buy additional points.

We have a December Use Year contract. There are 200 points coming this Dec., 100 banked, 100 from 2021.

We just booked a stay in our home resort (Aulani) which was 132 points. 68 points will be remaining which I will bank when allowed.

The question is - I wanted to buy 18 points , and use 114 points, for the June trip we already booked. That would let us bank 86 points, which we’ll use in Dec2022, for a separate trip. My account is showing 132 points used. 68 remaining.

Is it too late for us to buy the additional points available from Disney now, so we can bank the 86 points for next year?

You can buy OTU..one time use points at the 7 month mark or less to complete a reservation but those can not be banked. They expire at the end of the UY of the trip you booked with them when you purchased.

So, what you want for that one trip can not be done unless you get a transfer from another owner. And with the one in or out per UY rule, it’s hard to do when you only want a small amount of points.

Now, you can book what you can with your own points for that June trip..I assume you mean June 2023…and then when you hit the 7 month mark..call and ask to buy OTU points for adding another night assuming the room is still there.

Oh well - my DD (5 yr old) has already decided we have to stay at the Swan hotel - guess it’s one or two fewer days at AKL, and one happier DD!

I think I confused you. They can only be purchased when making a new reservation 7 months or less from check in. Yoy can’t just buy them for use whenever you want.

What some will do is buy them for a fake night in the same UY of the trip they want to book, cancel that, and then have them to use online as soon as the booking opens instead of having to call that day.

And, your 2021 points with a Dec UY would not need banking for trips in 2022..other than for Dec 2022.

Trips from Dec 1st, 2021 through November 30th, 2022 are part of your 2021 UY. You would not bank to use 2021 points during that time.

that’s the reason it would be helpful to buy points for the trip in the 2021UY, so I can save more points for two trips in the next year.

do you purchase them when you’re making the booking? And would that mean you have to call to book? (I didn’t see anything about buyingOTU points when I booked)

I don’t know if things have changed, but Disney let me purchase 24 OTUPs when making a reservation back in 2019 for 2020 when I had points still available in my account. I just bought them when I made the reservation.

Yes, you have to call and have to purchase when making the reservation. So, you can purchase them to book an August trip once in January.

It doesn’t matter if you still have points to use. The only rule is booking new when buying 7 months or less.

. Now, if you have June booked already and it was not booked during home resort booking, or there are still nights, you can call, book a random nights that is available for anytime more than 31 days from today, close to what you need buy the points, book it and then go in and cancel it.

Once canceled, modify June, and have it pick up the OTU points abs free up your 2021 UY points that can then be banked into your 2022 UY for those trips.
