As per thread title I want to buy a Sat Nav with US maps as the hire charges are stupid. Walmart has great prices but they don't seem to ship to the UK. Does anyone know if there is a way to get around this? The prices I've found is around $75 includes free life time maps. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ps. This is $100 less than hiring one for 18 days!!!!!

Do you have a portable satnav in the UK ?

most of them allow you to load other maps for a fee.

Iv got a tom tom uk one and it's £39 for to get the usa maps put on it from they website. Maybe look into a uk one and downloading the usa maps on that and taking it with you.

im just sorting mine at the mo, £32 for the usa maps for my tomtom, but on a orlando facebook page, someone pointed me in the direction of hiring one off ebay for £20 for your hols :)

Tom Tom want £34 for my sat nav model map - I wonder why they're all different prices?!

Anyway - hiring one off ebay would be a good idea. Car rental companies charge insane amounts and it's usually a portable nav system they give you. I never really understood that, given rental company cars tend only to be 1-2 years old and a lot of cars here have had sat nav as standard since 2012!

Bought the USA maps for our tomtom for £27 using a voucher code last week.

This is very timely as we just got maps for our Garmin. I'm not the technical branch of the family, but my husband tells me there are many open source maps available for free for sat navs.

Years ago... lots of years ago we had a Tom Tom, one of the first and it cost us a small fortune for the maps for the US. That thing was as big as a small TV back then!

Now, we have this Garmin thing and like I say, just yesterday the husband type downloaded stuff free and its now on our Garmin. Cost Zero other than the time to do it!

Hi. Can you ask your husband where he downloaded them from please?

Thanks all for the input.

I have got an old sat nav somewhere I can dig out and look at now. My current one is built into my car.

He suggests googling "free tom tom maps"

His came from garmin.openstreetmap.nl

If you have a tom tom though I suspect its not much use :)

Okay thanks. Have to find the old one first. Can't remember what kind it is haven't used it for two years!

Sorry it's £34.95 for the USA maps not £39 want I though it was off top my head. Just downloading it now as we go next Monday

Got a cheap card for my sat nac on ebay. Think it was dodgy but worked great, was cheap, and I'll be able to sell it on

Found it and it's. Tom Tom. Will juice it up and see if it still works and hopefully only have to spend £35 ish. Thanks everyone :)

Can I recommend an alternative for anyone looking to go but who hasn't currently got a sat nav.

If you've got a smartphone then google maps rivals most sat navs to be honest. alternatively on the iPhone, Maps is very good these days and both can be used without internet data to some degree. Google maps you can save the Greater Orlando area to the phone and never need data, I think you can on Maps as well.

If you have a Nokia (or now a Samsung Galaxy as they've just licensed it) then Nokia's Here maps and sat nav app are fantastic and again just as good as any TomTom

Finally, if your phone is unlocked, get a three sim card and use data while over there and have realtime traffic on google maps too!

Google's Android app has a snazzy feature of remembering where your car is too if you don't find that too creepy!

I bought mine from TomTom when they had a sale and also got 4.5% cash back too from Quidco.

A quick google search will bring up discount codes too - I just tried one I found on a dummy check out WelcomeTT14_uk and it gave £8 off.

Thanks that's helpful. I'm going to need to update the UK maps first I think then add on the US ones. So glad I posted this question, it's saved me at least £70 :)

I second this. We hardly need GPS when we drive around now, but when we went to Busch Gardens & Kennedy this year I downloaded the maps to my tablet using the Google Maps app so no mobile data was needed. Downloaded everything using the free Disney wifi. It cost me absolutely zero.

The GPS functions of the app are great, I use the app as my Sat Nav in the UK too.
