Buying a phone in US for use back home?

I did a quick forum search and didn't find anything--but maybe this has been discussed before. We just figured out our cell phone contracts have ended. Hurrah! We are considering buying phones during our trip to NH/DC at the end of the month.

Anyone done it? Got feedback for us? Cautions, favourites, anything?

• is the phone you are purchasing compatible with the frequencies of your home carriers?
• will warranty be an issue?
• are the taxes cheaper at home?
