Can you buy a mattress without the box spring? I thought I read you should always buy them as a set. My current mattress is 16 years old and sags in the middle, time for a new one. I think the box spring is fine though. Also has anyone purchased a sleep number bed? Do you like it?

yes you can buy a mattress seperately. Just check the terms of the warranty. My husband and I were pricing mattresses last year and went to the furniture shop. The salesman told us that if you buy the pieces seperately, the warranty would be voided because they couldn't guarantee the condition of the old box spring.

Yep, we have a Sleep Number bed. My husband loves it, and I'm getting used to it. The best part is that we can both adjust our side and be comfortable. We bought the foundation for it when we got our's so if we change mattresses, we won't have to buy another box spring again.

How do you "know" the box spring is fine? The box spring takes just as much wear and tear. A good box spring can make all the difference. Also realize that the box spring is made to support a specific mattress. Think of it as putting a old engine inside a brand new spiffy car body.

A good box spring is as important as a good mattress! It acts much like a large shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear, and it contributes to your comfort and support. Don’t put a new mattress on an inappropriate box spring. When you select the mattress, purchase its companion box spring. The two are designed to work best together.

We bought two mattresses last week for our 2 youngest DS's twin beds. We just needed the mattresses because the beds actually have the springs instead of the rails. We also put a piece of wood between the springs and the new mattress, covered it with the dust ruffle and voila, mattress only.

I've heard that putting a mattress on nothing but the rails/cross bars isn't a good idea....and probably wouldn't do that, but since we put a piece of wood on springs I figured it was a pretty solid foundation.

You can buy them seperately. We had a Sleep Number and I hated it! We have a TempuPedic now and I love it!

Yes, you can. Platform beds have become popular and many people use them without a box spring. We bought a new bed in the Fall and did a lot of research on this. You'll get differing opinions on whether you need the box spring but it's becoming more common to forgo it.

We went traditional, though and got the set.

We bought a sleep number (model i8) a couple of months ago. It took me about two weeks to get used to it. Now, I wake up without pain and it is great!
