Buying a gun

I also would like to know how the OP thinks she will get the gun out of the locked safe and loaded in time to shoot the burglar :confused3.

Locked? LOL, mine is right by ME all the time.
Its legal to carry in Ohio.

Any advice on what to look for and what to avoid?
Getting a handgun for personal/home safety.

Hubby is looking at 9mm but I dont know anything about guns.
Other than telling me to take a class (which I am going to do) and keep it locked up (already bought the safe) and not to shoot myself in the foot (you never know:sad2: ) any valuable info?

Thanks!

First things first......Take a gun safety class first. You should be able to sign up for one at your local gun store, or police station. After you have learned how to handle a gun, then you will be better prepared to purchase one. Good luck.pirate:

Handguns are for sissies. If you want a gun for home defense buy a shotgun. Seriously. Nothing quite like looking down the barrell(s) of a shotgun and hearing that chink-chink sound to make a thief think twice about their line of "work".

Good point. i also have a nice 20 gauge pump.
I keep it right in my closet.

If you're really buying a handgun for home safety, then getting a lockbox for it is counter-productive. As I've stated before on the boards, gun safes are to protect the expensive guns from being stolen during a home invasion when you're not there. Weapons intended for protection need to be easy access.

If you're concerned about the safety of leaving a gun lying around, buy a speed loader or learn to work the safety well. If you have kids, take them with you to the gun range. Teach them about weapons. Make sure they can easily tell the difference between a real handgun and a toy. Let them shoot a few holes in things, it's the best way to teach them that weapons are adult things that should not be toyed with.

Golf - I'm not a sissy... I'm having trouble getting the shotgun to fit in a purse.

Seriously though, I've heard that before.

This may be the most frightening post I have read in a long time.

Your post is what is frightening. And your support of the man that wants to take away our gun rights. :sad2:

Well, its the truth.
Once you go through a saftey course and you have no record...Its perfectly legal to carry concealed in Ohio. (with permit.)
and ALOT do!:thumbsup2
Why shouldnt we, the bad guys do.

Our gun is loaded in the nightstand (on DH's side of the bed...he's a MUCH better shot than I am).

I agree that the "cha-chink" of a shotgun is usually enough to deter most criminals, but if the "boom" of my handgun is too much for me, I don't want to hesitate to pull the trigger of a shotgun cause of the mess and noise it makes.

Amendment 2 A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I did not think that personal safety was the reason for the 2nd Amendment:confused3

Well, thankfully...EVERY supreme court decision thinks otherwise.
Old agrument you have, and it never wins.

I don't think the OP was asking for your interpretation of the 2nd ammendment.

Keep it loaded and in a safe that opens with a fingerprint...

Yep! :thumbsup2

I agree with this. Also, load it with bird shot--an inexperienced person would be able to hit something, as bird shot spreads--and it is not likely a person would be killed using this type of shot.

While I don't agree with keeping a loaded gun on a nightstand, this is fully within the PP's right. I disagree it's frightening, as most gun accidents happen in homes where the children were not adequately taught the dangers of playing with guns.

My son will be 8 this year and will probably get a bb gun for his birthday. We are teaching him small and now.

Again, it is our second amendment right. Unless we repeal the second amendment, there is no reason for shock.

Also, I would argue that there are more dangers from illegal guns than legal ones.

When I saw this thread, I knew it was going to turn into a "dangers of weapon ownership thread."

Now THIS would be good for home defense! :teeth:
