Buying a Camera

Has anyone had any experience of buying a Camera in Orlando? Cheaper than UK? Assume I would need to buy a UK charger for it? Thinking about the EOS 400d (Rebel xti).

i have a Panasonic dmcfz5 , but have seen a Panasonic dmcfz7 for $280 + tax, and the rate we are getting for the $ works out about £150 which i think is a bargain.

I was in NY last year and went to target and got a Fuji one and over all it was about £131 for the camera memory card and the case and all the extra's I bought. I paid on my credit card to see how much I spent.

I bought my Nikon in US and all I needed was a convertor plug for the battery charged which you can buy in Walmart. They also sell the Canon Rebel and the Nikon cameras, if you have any problems you can always take it back to Asda.

Very rare you can find a better deal in US. Take the 400D for eg.(I have it great camera)
when you add tax onto Walmarts price its about £500.
At PC world its £493 less 5%code thats available on cashback websites brings it down to £468+ £5 delivery.
The deals are in this country if you look. And no risk of import duty and VAT. and all the correct cables and warranty.

I drive is full of shops selling unsuitable or discontinued gear to the unwary. I looked in a couple last time I was over and was horrified at some of the things I was told by salesmen.
There is a nice camera shop in the Mall at Millenia, It was on the upper level at the opposite end to Macys i think. All glass shelves and display cases.

I have bought a few cameras over in the US, but found better deals on the high end cameras in local camera shops.
My current camera an Olympus E1 (fantastic DSLR camera) was bought in the UK, but many of the extras I have bought in the States as that's where the savings are.

I will tell you a trick what happened to my brother over there (short version) saw cam in window (half cost of UK) went in salesman got it out showed him agreed a price brother paid on card. Someone went to storeroom to get the cam. came back and said out of stock but we have this model which is better value, my brother knows the value of cameras and has a multi million pound business so not easily conned. The cam was a rip off not worth anywhere near the price of the other. He declined the offer, but saleman went on and on for about 30 minutes he would not refund the card. He eventually got it refunded but said anyone easily intimidated would not have stood a chance.

I'm with everyone else on this, I am not sure that you will find the 400D any chepaer in the US. I often use BH Photo as a good measure of the US prices - BH Photo 400D page on here for $775 with the 18-55 lens. You'd need to add sales tax of 6% ($46.50) which then gives you $821.50 - at an exchange rate of 1.9 you get £432.

Jessops, who are not always the cheapest, have it here for £499. So I guess the £67 extra is down to whether you woudl buy in the UK or wait until you get to the US. Also, don't forget that HM Customs may ask some questions as you come back into the UK

pricerunner.co.uk showed the 400D's best price in the UK was £439 delivered the other day.

Years back, it was always cheaper to buy such products in the US, but these days prices are much closer.

I remember my first DVD player I bought, the Philips DVD825, which cost me $300 in Target. At the time, Comet/Curry's etc werent even stocking such items, and specialist retailers were charging £500+ for the cheapest DVD players.....Id like to see a US retailer bettering the ASDA £9 dvd player currently on sale !

I posted a long reply this morning, but it seems to have disappeared!

Anyway, basically agree with everyone else - don't bother.

Camera Price Buster is great for finding good deals on Canon and Nikon (plus a few others).
