Buy One Way Tix While Waiting for SW??

Hi--Im hoping someone can shed some light on why or why I shouldnt do this. I am flying out of Philly in May and the flights are HIGH. Or they are 8PM takeoff and 6:30AMdepart.
I was gonna wait for SW but I am getting nervous. Airtran has a great flight from orlando (coming home)that I am afraid of losing but no great flights from philly.
has anyone ever booked one leg of their trip and waited for another good deal for the other?

This fall for the first time, I booked one leg for Southwest using a DING fare - and then waited for a good deal on the return flight. Since we were flying out the end of October, and back the beginning of November - it worked for us. I wouldn't do it for a peak travel time. Are you traveling around Easter? Spring Break (March - 3rd week) is a big travel time from my town. I booked those fares when they first opened up. I can never find a good direct flight deal that time of year.
 
I just found a great flight with USair at a great time at an average price.. Are there any reasons not to book two separate airlines for going and returning? The times are great for us 11:15am depart and 6:30pm coming home. The total would be $250RT and I am flying with 6 people. Should I do it or wait for SW? These times are great and I dont know how much longer I should wait to get good rates AND times for 6. Any advice??
 
I'm booking 3 one ways now.

Alb to Balt - got a good rate for the Wed before Thanksgiving and it is NOT the last flight out.

Then going Dulles to MCO - there do not seem to be many dings from Dulles - just recently starting flying out of Dulles. Rate is OK not great

We booked OW on different airlines last Dec. We had booked ow flights down and back with SWA, but the SONG had a great fare and better flight time to go down, so I cancelled the SWA (and used the credit later) and flew BDL-MCO on Song and back on SWA. Personally, the only airline I would count on getting a decent OW fare is SWA (Or one of the other discount carriers - they're not in may market so I don't think about them). So in yur case, yes book the good fare down and wait for SWa for the return.

Thanks so much for the replies! I chickened out on the wait and booked USair going and Airtran coming home. The price was decent. Im sure that if i waited I would get better but my sanity and no longer checking flight schedules like a maniac 4x a day is worth a lot too!! :thumbsup2
